They use it as a scapegoat because they dont want to figure out the real reason your doing these things.
Video games do influence you. All forms of media do.
People who deny that humans are not influenced by the media they are exposed to doesn't understand how humans work. We're extremely Dependant on imitation as means to finding socially acceptable behavior. I know this from simple observation of the people around me. Trends, and word use.
Many words that didn't come into popularity until they were seen on television shows such as South Park, Family Guy. I won't go into specifics. There is no reason too. Shows like Jack Ass defined self harm, dangerous behavior as funny for a new generation of teenagers. Eight years ago barely anyone on the Internet used the N word, now I see it being thrown all over the place by any type of person. Yes, I used T.V. specifically, because I know few are less willing to accept videogames influence them. Why do you think corperations spend millions on T.V. adds each year? Because they know it influences people to buy their products. And still many people deny that T.V. adds have any effect on them. Why do we have movie trailers before movies?
These are just some small examples. To deny that video games don't influence your behavior is just setting yourself up for lack of self awareness. Humans are very dependent on fitting into social groups. To do this we emulate what we see. There have been studies to show that humans are actually more dependent on mimicking behavior than monkeys and other primates. I know from personal experiences that the games I've been exposed to influence my perceptions of the World. The only difference is I'm equipped to handle them appropriately because I acknowledge how pop culture influences others.
If you really want to convince your parents your behavior has nothing to do with the video games you play... then be mature, and don't allow the videogames to influence you to begin with. Though, your parents do hold some responsablity because they do allow you to play those games.

Meh...the point here is that they blame everything on video games. Why don't they blame, say, school for instance?
The closest things I get are "he's always on the computer," in regards to school marks, or not being social enough.
So, while mine don't I know may other parents do, because they are ignorant.
they do have a marginal effect but that is largely outweighed by day to day factors. Media only presents the idea If somebody agrees with that image and chooses to act on it in way that is unhealthy or bad too freaking bad Natural selection. To deny the impact of media on a person is foolish but to cosider it paramount is even more so. Look at Columbine and Doom. Sure the killers may have immersd themselves in a violent digital world but in the end any possible wieght that doom had in their massacre is far outwieged by everything else and honestly is not even worth our attention.Video games do influence you. If someone presents a certain image or sound evein n a postive or even neutral way and somebody choses to immatate it thats noones fault except the person that commmited such insane action like copying jackass. I think people confuse the word influenced with forced. I think in general parents should focus on what their kids play and shut up about it instead of this moral crusade crap. Think about it like this any possible yet unlikely harm Gears Of War may cause your child will be far overshadowed by the fun. Its the day to day factors that influencs us the most alothough those are sometimes influenced by the media. But I think we put way to much wight over influence and not enough on personal choice.

Diigital Exile? Your avatar is the work of my favorite artist. Nice to see someone else who appreciates him. Even if I can't pronounce or spell his name.
i didn't because my parents aren't that dumb the real blame should be put on this world we live intony2077ca
As much as I hate parents blaming videogames, I don't think they should blame "this world we live in". Sure it may not be perfect, but nothings perfect. We can't just snap our fingers and hope something happens, if you want a better society you have to do something instead of putting blame on it.
My parents never blamed video games for anything. They liked us playing video games because it kept us inside where they knew where we were at instead of out running around town possibly getting injured or in trouble.double_decker

pretty much the same for me. I'm 22 and away from home now, and my mom still sees video games as a great de-stresser for me. whenever i talk to her on the phone and she thinks i sound stressed, she actually tells me to go play some video games.

thats the biggest understatement I've seen all day
God I hate how every single parent/old person blames violence and bad attitude on videogames.I_pWnzz_YoU
I'm a "parent/old person" and I don't blame anything bad on video games!

While I am not a parent nor an old person, I only rarely encounter old people who blame things on video games.

Why? The world isn't perfect, but it's not terrible. Just because the US is ****ed right now doesn't mean people in other parts of the world are living horrible lives.
I play violent video games, and I have a great attitude.
And I very very rarely get into it with my parents, get into fights, or mess around.
well I'm in China and once a year I heard a child comitedsuicide. before he did, the press said that he played warcraft for 2 days on end, continuously. well, the media start, to blame video games. they said it's the developer of that games fault, that is why he commit suicide. and my parents started talking: hey don't play game, play games can let you commit suicide!! I understand why they can even have this kni of thought, Chinese gossiping about those things

Since properganda has hit video games, it should be blamed at now a days. Better, lets blame the companies that put them in there.

Video games are going to die because of this.
Watch the other companies start copying.
Mine are like
"Get off your Wii and get your grades up"
Sometimes it goes the same with my brother, but with everything he does, and he gets violent...
My family's odd.
Well, one time I ran a hooker over with a motercycle, and my parents blamed video games for that. It wasn't their fault; I just wanted my money back. 8)
dogel99
Weird. I used to do that in San Andreas...OH SNAP!!1!11!!
Doesn't matter if you are in Harvard or in middle school your parents will always think that certain things you do are ridiculous and stupid. I am 18 and like to have fun and pull pranks and such and my parents always blame it on video games. Do you make any mistakes that your parents blame on video games? Whats up with my parents blaming things on one of my favorite hobbies? What could I tell my parents to stop them from blaming the games?l0ve
Â
Well for starters, if you would stop doing stupid stuff then they wouldn't have to blame your behaviour on ANYTHING.Â
