Two nights ago when I saw The Dark Knight, I was amazed by the film. It was great. But there were some children, 10-years-old and younger who were there. Some of the film is incredibly impressionable to kids. I mean for instance, the infamous magic trick scene. The Joker stabs a pencil (kids can get these weapons at school) into a table and puts a mob worker's head into it. Even I'd like to see that again. Also here's a quote from The Joker,

Do you want to know how I got these scars? Well, my father was a drinker, and a fiend. And he would get very violent. My mother took a steak knife to try to defend herself. And my father, he didn't like that at all, no he didn't. So he took it away from her, and looked at me. And he said, "Why so serious? Let's put a SMILE on that face."
That could hit home to some kids, what do you think?

I heard the movie was pretty close to getting an R rating. Donno if it's true or not though.

But yea, a lot of parts made me turn my head away, especially the part where he put the knife in gamble's mouth

It might not be a good idea to bring kids younger than 10 to this movie. Of course it all depends on the maturity level of the kid. I also heard that this was pretty close to getting an R rating. I think I read that Christopher Nolan had a hard time figuring out how to fit the magic trick in while still getting that crucial PG-13 rating lol.

Yeah, some critics voiced there concern about this. Although, to be fair, the Tim Burton Batman movies had more blood in them. Although, the Nolan films were darker.
