People answering questions that don't apply to them

Why do people feel the urge to answer questions / respond to posts on here (or any online forum) that don't apply to them? For example, I'll make a post asking "What's your favorite video game?" And sure enough, there will be at least one person who responds with, "I don't play video games." Well, if you don't play video games, why the hell are you even bothering to respond to the thread? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that when the question "do you like video games?" Is asked on a public forum targeting a large group of people, it's implied that the question is aimed at people who play video games.

I think it's because they want to inflate their post count because they somehow believe that having a high post count makes them important.

Some people are dicks but others just like participating, even if they don't have much to contribute. As for me, there are certain people in OT that I really like so I'm always happy to know they are reading my threads, even if their reply doesn't offer much.

Then of course there are situations where people feel strongly about something and want to let you know why they don't partake in it even if that's not relevant to what you were asking.

Yeah look, I think they just want to feel involved as people don't like being left out.

Why does it bother you? So long as they don't derail the topic, I don't see what's wrong with participating; more often than not, replies that don't strictly conform to the question being asked are what get a topic going. For instance, this reply may be viewed as "answering a question that doesn't apply to me" since I don't share your vexation. Yet if it's not for this reply, all that is left is a circle-jerk of agreement. The people are dicks reply is already being rehashed.

Maybe they want to join a conversation....hell OT for instance is much slower than it used to be and it might be the only viable thread at that time. Anyway....why does it bother you? In a sense they are answering your question.

That would be almost everybody here at OT whether they were being provocative or being reactive....or maybe it's System Wars I'm thinking about.
