This pisses me off. My neighbors two houses over complain about me smoking outside. My brother's wife is even worse, I was smoking on her patio and her kids were in school and she says: "That's where my kids play. Thanks for SMOKING there." Like im going to contaminate the grass or something. She almost made me smoke across the street from her house while I was staying there.

/end rant.

So, do any of you guys experience this nonsense?

300 feet is far enough I say. It's not like you were smoking right next to them, in that case I would understand them asking you to move a couple of feet, or them moving a couple of feet. But at that distance, pollution from cars is probably higher than your smoking as far the air they breath in are concerned.

My parents once complained about the neighbours smoking. Not their smoking directly, but rather the ash tray they used. They had a deep one that could probably hold 200 cigs or more. One day one of them hadn't put out their cig so it was burning/creating a lot of smoking from this ash tray. And this kept going on for hours without any action from them... The stench was horrible. Also our houses are next to each, we share one wall. This was on their balcony which is right next to ours.

When I go out for a walk I always think I come out for some fresh air not a ciggy. I was on path the other day and walked past a work place and some one was smoking out on the path so there not in work as its illegal. But what about us who got to walk past who don't smoke. I was just about to pass and he took a puff off it and just as I walked he let all smoke out. Soon as he did that I just covered my face with my sleeve. He didn't say anything but I was ready if he did. Think it horrible when your out for a walk but 300ft on your own property is fine is ok and by the time the smoke comes its well gone. Some people just like complaining.

Just don't throw your cigarette butts in my yard, and I won't mind.

Cigarette butts are cotton and paper. They biodegrade in like a week. But yeah they do look messy for a WHILE.

So long as you aren't doing it within 50 feet of an entrance to a public building, I couldn't care less. I hate the smell of it, but you are entitled to kill your lungs if you so choose.

300 feet?? I get that some people can hate the smell, but if someone is smoking on their private property nobody gets to tell them they can't. Your brother's wife thing is different, when you're not at your own home I'd suggest always asking if it's okay to smoke and where, just to be courteous.

But yeah really "that's where my kids play"... and where her kids study, play, eat and socialize they're likely going to be exposed to more than one kid who isn't vaccinated during their lifetime, not to mention other dangers like vehicle fumes, sunlight, processed foods (pretty much everything is going to be a hazard)... and yet she decides to get pissy about cigarette smoke that isn't going to be there by the time her kids are home?

People have gotten really extreme in their reaction to people smoking cigarettes. It seems really absurd to me. As if a child will drop dead instantly if they smell a bit of tobacco smoke. I'm not a cigarette smoker and don't like the smell but it really isn't worth getting worked up about like people do these days. I do occasionally smoke a cigar or pipe tobacco though (and enjoy that smell ) so maybe my opinion does not count.

As someone who was a smoker for about 15 years, I know the kind. Hell, in college one of the RAs use to come from around the other side of the dorm complaining she could smell our smoking from like an 8th story window. People so much as see you with an unlit cigarette in your mouth and they cough as if you're blowing it in their face. I'd often go find secluded spots to smoke just to avoid assholes and yet they still find away to come so close and invade your bubble and only then express dismay that you're smoking.

When I was a smoker I was conscientious enough not to puff and blow on people passing. But people act like they can't control their breathing while they pass, not that hard, I do it all the time passing cars blowing fumes toward the sidewalk people could try not breathing it in by just pausing any inhalation for a second or two, but then again I think they just like making themselves miserable and complaining.

Anyhow, I hope you told her what a dumb bitch she was to her face. I would have. And it would have made my day. But, judging from your venting I figure you passed on the opportunity.

@TheHighWind: They stick around a lot longer than a week, but that's irrelevant. If you can't respect my property, you don't deserve respect in return.

No one really gave me too much crap when I smoked given my size and perpetual "resting jerk face" but yeah, people's reactions to just the vaguest hint of tobacco smoke is pretty ridiculous.

I mean, the trucks and cars driving by you every 5 seconds smell worse and cause more damage than the cigarette I'm smoking down wind of you does. Chill...the ****....out.

With that said, so happy I don't smoke [tobacco] any more.

To be fair, if you're going to smoke at someone else's house you should probably ask them about it first

I can relate to your brothers wife.

I'm a smoker, but i don't smoke in the house or car, cause i don't want ash on the floors and the windows to turn yellow.

As for the 300 feet thing...are you smoking cigars, like 10 at the same time? Can't think of anything else that can cover 300 feet in a time for 1 smoke.

Maybe they saw him smoke and thus complained?

Some people will complain just to complain I guess.

That is probably worse to breath in than cigarette smoke. Might not have more harmful components in the smoke, but a lot more of those less harmful I guess.

Ahh here in Cali I see vapers going hard at it anywhere, but I'm guessing that's different. Anywho if you're at your own house it shouldn't matter, be mindful elsewhere though.

You should probably quit. It seems like the world is trying to tell you something. J/k .. Whatever you do is your problem man. Its honestly a hard thing to neglect, the smell is strong, and it does come across as bad for your health, especially if kids are around. When someone walks down the street smoking, i tend to cross the street, or stay way, way behind. I thought they had invented something to prevent the smoke from escaping ?

That's not true. Cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate, which is a plastic, and take a long time to degrade. Not only that, but they leave behind toxic materials (arsenic, chromium, cadmium, nicotine, etc) that leeches into the ground water over time.

As a fellow smoker, I agree that your neighbor and your sister-in-law are both being ridiculous, your SIL less so just because it's her property. Your neighbor, especially, can **** off. What you do, within legal limits, on your own property is none of their concern. If you were being disruptive (excessively loud, etc), they might have a point.
