I wanted to know what people outside of the USA think of issues in American politics. What do you think of obama? What do you think of republican conservatism vs. democrat liberalism?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I find the whole two-party system ridiculous - it polarizes people and creates this Democrat vs. Republican mentality, as if they were enemies or something. It's a forced-choice situation that doesn't allow for most people to find their own political niche that better fits their beliefs. For example, if you're socially liberal yet fiscally conservative, which party are you supposed to vote for?
The Republicans don't have a very good reputation in Finland, mainly due to your previous president. Obama, however, is still hugely popular.
Personally, I can't stand the ultra-conservative, gay-bashing, pro-life Republicans. Why can't they just let people live their personal lives as they choose to?
TC here, I agree. moderates and independents are a huge minority in politics here.I find the whole two-party system ridiculous - it polarizes people and creates this Democrat vs. Republican mentality, as if they were enemies or something. It's a forced-choice situation that doesn't allow for most people to find their own political niche that better fits their beliefs. republicans are white people who live in the past and believe their race still controls this country. they also believe that everyone in the world are christian god fearing people. they love god and aren't comfortable unless they are in a war. see the irony there.
And religion influences waay to much politics in the states in my opinion. It isn't secular enough.RushMetallicaHmm interesting would you explain in what way does religion influence politics in the States? I don't like Obama...I think that he got elected just because he is black...

Hmm interesting would you explain in what way does religion influence politics in the States? I don't like Obama...I think that he got elected just because he is black... Not the entire, but it seems as if it is halting progressoin, like say abortion, or homosexual marriage. Now these things are entirely my opinion, and religion might not be the reason for everyone to oppose those things, but it definetly doesn't help.[QUOTE="RushMetallica"] And religion influences waay to much politics in the states in my opinion. It isn't secular enough.Snake_1222

America as a country is generally more right-wing than the UK. At the moment your Republicans are probably further right than our tories. Bush is seen as a disaster, and hedefinitely harmed your nation's reputation. Obama's still popular, as are his healthcare reforms since not having the NHS (though we do know his proposal is very different) is unthinkable over here. The UKis far more secular thanAmerica, despite your separation of Church and State and the factthat we still have bishops in the House of Lords. It wouldn'thurt a party leader's chances too much if he were an atheist, for example.
Too much religion mixed with politics.
The two party system is also something I'm iffy about because I wouldn't be surprised if there were many republicans who voted down a democrat bill just because its a democrat bill and not thinking about the rest of the country and vice versa.

Each state makes their own laws....as it should be. Being a particular religion doesn't mean politics is religious.I some states maybe, but not all, and that I don't agree with. OF COURSE he did! I mean, it is always such a benefit being black here.
I can just walk down the street and people say "Wow! A black man! I want to hang out with him and make him a sandwich."

Ok I get the sarcasm
But most of African americans voted for obama because he was black...Their vote had nothing to do with his reforms...I think that there wasn't a lot of black people voting for McCain...

wow you are showing just how ignorant on the subject matter you are. the current head of the GOP is a black man.
I dislike both sides... If I had to make a choice I would pick democrat even though I disagree with more than a few of their policies.

Glad you picked up on the sarcasm.
As has been pointed out in these forums many times before, yes, few blacks voted for McCain. Few blacks EVER vote Republican in recent decades.
And even if ever black person voted Obama, and ever black person that could voted, we are still only 15% of the population. We cannot decide an election on our own.

I have long said that the Republican party is suckering the religous right on abortion. The use it to build a voter base, but they are never actually going to do anything about it.
Like was pointed out, if they wanted to they could have. Even has a right leaning supreme court. Republicans had complete and total control for years, and nothing.

Yes, and it pisses me off almost as much as the damn thing being allowed in the first place. Roe only passed by one vote and yet they wouldn't do a thing when they had it all in the bag.

The Republican party is about money. And those Doctors doing the abortions have it. The party will talk the talk, but when it gets down to it, they want the money that the practice generates. They could care less about the issue really.

Democrats are the same thing, with one difference in tactics: Blame the Republicans. That was Obama's whole campaign: "We live in Hell and it's the Republicans' fault! But don't worry; I'll fix it!"
It's nothing but a continuous turf war.
