Hello there!

I've been thinking it might be fun to write some poetry, but I would like to ask something first. Does all poetry have form? The point of poetry is to express yourself and show people meaning...I think. So to be poetry must it have ryming words and such? My fathers an english teacher...so I could ask him but he's too busy :P

Thanks for any replies

It doesn't necessarily have to rhyme, but it still has to flow. Maybe look up "the love song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by TS Eliot to get a good idea of how to make a poem flow without it necessarily rhyming. There are very few rhymes in that poem.

Write what you feel. Put deeper meaning into what you write. Its always fun to have underlying messages that people will never understand. There is alot of different forms in poetry take an advanced english class and you will learn all about it. Try free verse for easy poetry.

How about this ( I didn't make this, just so you know. It's from an anime series)

If I were the rain...which binds together the earth and the sky, who in all eternity will never mingle...would I be able to bind the hearts of people together?

What is that, is it a poetic verse? Or something else?...

Well that depends, Like LJ said it doesn't have to rhyme. The English version of the Odyssey doesn't rhyme but it's a great poem (long one at that)

Sigh, all so confusing. I give up on poetry, I'll find a different hobby :(

Ya see I thought poetry would be more....I dunno.....easy. It seems nowadays it's just so hard to fully express one's feelings and I thought that poetry might be simple, and that instead of having to think about whether or not this or that rhymes or if this flows perfectly with that, I could simply write down what I think, and arrange it in a nice manner. It seems to revolve more around the flow than the actual message

No, most modern poetry doesn't have an official form, and that's what I support. I haven't taken a poetry class yet, and I'm really dreading doing so, because I think rules just ruin the stuff....I write however it comes out, and I enjoy doing it like that.

It's kind of like the symphony. In the early classical era everything had to follow the same form, and then Mr. Beethoven came along and decided to bend the rules a bit, and next thing you know everyone is doing their own thing.

Poetry is best like that.

Whenever I hear a poem read on The Writer's Almanac (NPR), they hardly ever rhyme or seem to have an official form.

Anyway, good luck, and when you write some, post it on your blog and PM me. I love poetry.

Not necessarilly. There are no bounds to art, and free verse poetry lack a set structure or rhyme scheme.
