I'll wait for that executive order from Obama to raise the debt ceiling. DroidPhysX
He just said he wouldn't. Today, in fact.

No need to worry gold sacs is to big to go bankrupt, there will be no default.EasyStreet
There won't be a default, period. Even if we don't increase the debt ceiling. We have plenty of tax revenue to pay off the nation's debt.

I don't think so. They're backpedaling on the whole "it'll be armageddon if we don't increase the debt ceiling." I think he'll wait, make cute remarks on the side-line, act presidential when he has to, until the House passes ANOTHER bill.
He may as well postpone it indefinitely since it's vowed not to pass the senate or the president's desk. It would just be a waste of time, and since we have less than a week at this point they don't really have time to do that.

House Dems and Bill Clinton are pressuring him. Confident that on August 1st, if a deal isn't reached, he will do it.Is it true that tonight Boehner will cry himself to sleep?Master_LiveWe just wasted a day in something that is wholly political theater when we face absolutely horrifying consequences if the debt ceiling doesn't get raised in time. You would be surprise.
The current GOP plan and Demo's plan are virtually alike, yet they still can't come to an agreement.
The only different between the two plans is:
Republicans debt deal is good til the 2012 Election
Democratic debt deal will last until after the 2012 Election
In other words, one party wants to reiterate this pointless debate again before the election to make the other party look bad, and the other ones to wait until after the election for the very same reason.
I could see people blaming Obama for not raising the debt ceiling via 14th amendment.GOP would get the blame for debt ceiling not increasing meaning their chances of winning in 2012 would be slim
pero2008
They will pass something before August 2nd. I think the whole default thing and not getting paid is just a scare tactic. But both sides don't want to default so I see something passing.
pero2008
I would agree with you except that there are three sides. Tea Party being the third, and they don't seem to actually understand what the default would mean.

I could see people blaming Obama for not raising the debt ceiling via 14th amendment. Gotta love that logic, too. They'd be blaming the president for not challenging the constitutionality of a law which the GOP used to cause a default.[QUOTE="pero2008"]I could see people blaming Obama for not raising the debt ceiling via 14th amendment. OMFG I just had a nerd-gasm when I read that. That's got to be one of the coolest little known things I have read it a while.
Who is leading the Republican party right now in the house? It seems like they are leaderless right now. I don't see any deficit reduction bill getting passed at this point, just because I don't see how that can happen. The most that can actually pass congress is probably just a last minute clean debt ceiling raise. And if that can't pass (I'd be more surprised if it didn't pass then if it did), Obama really has no choice but invoke the 14th amendment, or do something a little more create, such as create a trillion dollar coin.
But it looks like it's almost impossible for any deficit reduction plan to get through. The votes just don't seem to be there.
There arent words anymore for the state that the new House Republicans have put the government in. Its completely ridiculous that there should be so much argument over something as necessary as the debt ceiling. This is something that needs to be raised, when its time. These new republicans are just hijacking it to get their ideological goals on the fast track. Even when they have basically won, they still refuse to compromise in the slightest. its pathetic. I think it would be cool for the President to just invoke the 14th amendment and tell these guys off, but I dont think that that would be a good way for him to gain votes come next year. Then again, if it ends up really hurting our nation like the economists say, not doing it could hurt him too...Feel sorry for the guy. At the end of the day, the voters will put the blame on his shoulders even though it was manufactured by the new republicans.wolverine4262
Well alot of people by this point, but this isn't your grandfather's Republican party.
The Establishment can't successfully control their wing and they know that working with the Democrats who are solidly Progressive thanks to all the Dogs falling in 2010 will cost them ALL of their single-issue their base supporters (Anti-Choice, Christianists, Anti-Gun Control, Anti-Gay, etc) while leaving them with only the Business Elites to rely on. I just can't wait untilthe Tea Party supporters try to split from the Republicans and form a third party. They're anarchists, plain and simple.
And to think, the Republicans could have gotten 4 trillion in cuts across the board including all those entitlement programs that they loathe so much. What a bunch of fools. HoolaHoopManThis is the worst part. We had a 4 trillion dollar plan, but b/c it involved revenues it was thrown out. These Republicans wont budge an inch while democrats have moved into the right to try and please them and it still isnt enough. Frankly, I think the only reason Obama is no longer in the negotiations is b/c congress GOP sees him as the enemy and they wont support a thing he says.

Please, stop with the drama.
I thought something similar the other day. They showed a protest at the White House and this lady wanted them to get rid of the EPA because it "dont do anything". I think a lot of these people have a strong distrust for government and dont fully appreciated everything that it provides. If I was Boehner I would have said, "Okay, forget you guys. We are going to bring the congress dems in on this." But he thought he could bring them in line...Well alot of people by this point, but this isn't your grandfather's Republican party.

I want to know which of the proposed budgets aren't using that baseline budgeting gimmick. A little POed with the politicians doing that.

None of them. Baselining is pretty the way budgeting has worked since the 70s if you're going by the CBO's numbers. I could be wrong on this, but I don't believe budgets deviate much from that process.
This is one of those cases that leads me to believe just about every member of Congress is worthless. I say throw them all in the same house and make a reality show out of it. That's about the only thing they'd be good for.UCF_Knight
what do you think CSPAN is?

I mean the gimmick they're using by saying they're cutting spending, when they're actually still spending more just not as much as they thought.
