just to preemptively argue with people who say " omg dude these bands are the mainstream ones, or X duo is better " , this poll is the most popular dual guitar players in bands, so that more people can know them and vote, theirs no use putting an obscure technical death metal band on a poll even if they are the best duo of guitar players, if only 3 people on this forum have heard of them.

so my criteria for this poll were that the bands were well known and that both players in the duo are well known.. i thought of putting exodus , testament and death on here ( especially death).. but no one really knows the guys Chuck S. had on Death's albums.. their was a new guy every album..

my decision is easy.. megadeth. in my opinion dave mustaine is one of the, if not the best rhythem player their is.. and marty friedmen is my favorite lead player.. and in my top 5 best guitar players.

vote and discuss!

Megadeth's duo.Actually both duos that Megadeth had (Mustaine/Poland and Mustaine/Friedman) beat all the others anyway.

Exodus and Nevermore are, IMO, the two best, or, at least, two of the best.

Just because they're "mainstream" doesn't mean they can't be awesome :D. My vote goes to Megadeth. Mustaine is the best rhythm player out there in my opinion, and Friedman is an excellent lead player, although I personally liked Chris Poland better. Hopefully Chris Broderick does some crazy stuff on the new album.

No doubt about it for me, out of those five Dave Murray and Adrian Smith win hands down. I'm not going to say they're the most skillful duo on that list, but they have what matters most - that knack possessed by only a few lead guitarists (Alexi Laiho and Andre Olbrich come to mind) to play more than just notes. Maiden has the instrumental spirit to wield a whole arsenal of emotions. They can create epic battles, dark suspense, triumphal victories even if you take out Harris's completely relevant lyrics and and the heavy metal savior that is Bruce Dickinson. That's no slight at the other guitarists on the list, at least not all of them. Reign in Blood is still the best thrash metal album out there, and Metallica were no joke in their earlier days. Megadeth on the other hand are all skill and no creativity if you ask me, an absolute bore. Judas Priest, well I didn't know anyone even remembered their guitarists. We're talking breaking the law breaking the law WAA breaking the law breaking the law WAA WAA Judas Priest? Can't say I remember British Steel much, and I haven't heard anything else, but I distinctly remember being bored with them. If anyone has a recommendation I'll listen to it.

cacophony was less of a band, and more of a two guys solo album in one kinda deal.. it was highly indulgent.. dont get me wrong i love cacophony.. and friedman and becker's solo work.. but it was less of a band than solo tradeoffs and just " hey check out how awesome i am"

"Talk about a mind-blowing line-up. Slayer and Megadeth - two of the bands that defined the thrash/metal genre - will perform together for the first time in more than 15 years when they co-headline four shows in Canada in late June. The tour, dubbed "Canadian Carnage," will also feature Machine Head and Suicide Silence, and will see Megadeth and Slayer each closing two of the four shows. " ^ strait from megadeth.com

british steel is garbage, listen to sad wings of destiny , stained class ( my personal favorite ) , and painkiller.. and your opinion of priest will quickly change.. the 70's were their classic albums, the 80's were mainstream garbage, the downfall starting with british steel, and their 1990 album painkiller was a great thrash album.

Yeah your right, then in that case I would choose Smith and Murray, or James Hetfield and Kirk Hamster.

pfft, I saw Megadeth with Bodom and In Flames last year. Nothing like a bunch of washed up old guys all sharing a stage together. Jesus, can I call Bodom that already? They maintained the tradition of closing with Downfall, In Flames are fun live no matter how much they suck, and I got High on Fire and Job for a Cowboy opening, so it was a pretty sweet deal. Two amazing bands in their prime today and a lot of nostalgia.

Loomis plus Broderick was a great duo. Too bad he never became an "official" member.
