It seems as though it was just a few years ago that a gay or lesbian student could literally make news headlines by trying to take a partner of the same gender to the school prom. But I'm guessing that it's no big deal nowadays, except perhaps at private schools with strong religious traditions.

In the UK we don't tend to do proms like America, we just turn up and hope for the best. I don't think they would be bothered though, if it ever happened.

A *few* years ago? Anyway, I don't know if my high school allowed gays to prom or not; I didn't go to mine.

It was none of the school's business who you were romantically engaged with at any point in school as long as nothing criminal going on.

Actually yes it is the schools business. Once you step on school grounds you are their responsibillity with their rules.

1. Prom wasn't held on school grounds 2. They can only stop you from certain actions. They could tell a gay couple not to make out but they couldn't actually tell them to not be a couple.

Yeah.

Come to think of it, with education budget cuts, it would be kinda stupid for them to refuse anybody on those kinds of grounds now :P

Two lads went together to the end of school ball thingy we had when I was 16. They were both very openly gay so no one was shocked, despite our school being quite churchy.

You're right they can't tell you not to be a couple but it is their business who you are with at school organized functions or on school grounds.

My school allowed it. I think that's more "In Canada prom isn't the huge deal it is in the states and thus the school didn't give a crap" It's still a pretty big deal but nothing like it is in the US.

I didn't think my school cared. Well my prom was kind of crazy though. 90% of the people who were there were drunk so everybody was dancing with everyone else.

We didn't have any same gender couples in our school, or they didn't come to prom. So I wouldn't know. But I wouldn't mind having them. I personally think it would be pretty cool to have a gay friend. I just don't have one.

I was the only gay person in my year (as far as I know) and I didn't go to my prom, so I can't be certain.

But since this is the UK I'm sure if they said no I could sue them to hell and back :P so they probably would of allowed it.

I don't think anyone has ever had the guts to try, but I don't think it would go over well since our principal is a hard military type.

I don't think my school would care, the students would though as there are a lot of ICP fans so they would probably beat up a gay if they saw one.

yes they do which is particualarly amazing when you consider that I live in the countryside of Indiana. It's one of the most red states, you can literally count the amount of African American people who go there year to year on a single hand (generally not using all fingers), we are smack dab in the middle of the bible belt, and yet we manage to come out on the right side when it comes to this issue. Go us.

Well at the school ball in my 11th grade year of highschool, 2 pretty hot girls went that we all knew and most people were friends with and we had no idea they were lesbian till then we just thought they were good friends because they never like kissed or did anything a lesbian couple would do,

Anyway they made out there and every1 was pretty shocked and so was some of the christian teachers but overall no1 stopped them,

I remember my friend felt guilty for weeks after because he had just broke up with one of them 2 months aho and he thought thats what made her lesbian, hehehe i encouarged him just to make him feel bad

No, and I think it should stay that way. The reason why schools have it the way they do is not because they are against same couples, but because they will get end of hell from some of the parents who are. Schools dont want to deal with that, so they just leave it.

Your school staff sound spineless and cowardly.

If they bar same-sex couples from attending the prom, might they not receive objections from the parents of gay pupils?

I couldn't care less if a gay couple turned up or not. Everyone was drunk anyway, even some of the teachers.

No they didn't allow same-sex couples to go to our formals. However I went to a Marist Brothers school and a condition of going there was that you would tollerate their religious beliefs on school ground. For example, even if you were an athiest you would still go to the masses and sing hyms, and the school song would always be the Sub Tuum, and no same-sex relations were allowed on school property. You don't like it, change schools.

that argument goes both ways, if you allow it you have the religious parents saying "ohnoz thats bad!" and if you dont allow it you have parents of those who prefer the same sex saying "ohnoz thats bad!" to say one side takes preference over another is to imply certain things

lets put it this one

public school= if they are open about it they will. and school can't and will do nothing about it. Or they can face a much easir lawsuit and put on the news.

private schools could get alway with it but can still yet face lawsuits ect.

My school (public) tell you the truth the students/ teachers was more interactive with everyone and more down to earth like some other schools. Everyone knew everyone and everyone was cool. which i am thankful for going to that school and wish more was like that.

How is it cowardly? School isnt the place to make a stand for gay rights, its a place of learning. I went to a cheap public school, they dont have the time or resources to deal with these people. They dont not allow gay couples to go, they just cant go together. Honestly, nothing wrong with that. My flatmate who also went my HS (Whom is gay agrees with the schools stance.

School is the first place to make a stand for gay rights. Free expression of oneself is a part of academic freedom--human freedom, really. It is not MY obligation to conform to somebody else's discriminatory policies simply because they don't want to deal with issues. If shouting is what makes them change their stance, then I'll shout louder.

What's obviously wrong with the policy is that, if straight students are permitted to attend as couples but gay students are not, then an institution that is at least partially funded by the taxpayer is discriminating on the basis of an innate trait (i.e. sexual orientation).

How is that different from a public school's permitting White students to attend as couples but saying that Black and Hispanic students can only attend as singles?

I'm pretty sure the school would have some kind of legal case against them if they didn't. :|
