Don't get me wrong, there are certain times and foods where a fork and a knife is a must. But I sometimes see people use them extensivley for stupid reason, like the Sienfeld episode when people started eating snickers bars with them. In the middle east, we use spoons for rice and liquidy stuff, and hands to other stuff like meat and whatever.

I don't know, I find it unnecessary to eat a fish with a knife and a fork, specially when its a fillet.

When eating out for example, yes a fork and a knife is necessary. But in your own home with your family or significant other, why?

I eat Ethiopan quite often, so I can see where you're coming from... however, my hands do feel quite icky afterwards for a while, not to mention smelling of cumin.

Yeah I'm from Bangladesh, and we are used to eating stuff like rice and curry with our hands, much easier than Knives and forks

It's an exclusive restaurant. It's cool in an ironic, post-modern sort of way. Don't make fun of them or else they'll just insult you for being uncultured.

I use my hands for stuff Like chicken, fried fish... If it's something that requires a knife, like steak, then I use a fork, I think I would just look like a slob trying to rip it apart with my teeth.

I agree with you, TC. I much prefer eating meat and other foods with my hands if I can, as long as I'm not eating out in public. I get almost a primal satisfaction out of doing it, actually. As for why most people do, that's just the customs they grew up with. Or they don't want to get their hands dirty.

Chicken fingers, freedom fries, hamburgers ect. are good to eat with you hands. I can't imagine trying to eat a steak or a roast with just my hands though.

I eat the last bit of steak with my hands. When you get down to the bone, your teeth are the only thing that are gonna get those last bits.

There are times I'd rather use chop sticks. I'm not Asian, but I do enjoy eating with chop sticks. I can always tell how authentic a Chinese or Japanese restaurant is by whether or not they have forks or chop sticks set at the table.

I know what you mean and it certainly has to do with culture. But still, sometimes it gets into my nerves, when I see someone ripping through something that is really delicate and small with a fork and a knife.

I simply cannot do without a knife, how else am I to defend myself from a possible foe? A fork simply will not do...

Is there something intrinsically wrong with having a soup spoon, teaspoon, dinner knife, dinner fork, salad fork, bread knife, dessert fork, and dessert spoon with your meal? If that's wrong, then I don't want to be right. :P

Yeah. I'm a strong advocate for maintaining customs and manners, but that just seems like a wasted effort on their end.

I would never eat anything with my hands that could get something on them. If there's a food item that I could pick up while keeping my hands (at least relatively) clean, then I'll do that, otherwise I need a fork.

There's certain foods that are best eaten without silverware, but for the most part I do use a fork and a spoon.

Well there are some foods that can go both ways. In this case it just depends if it's appropriate to use my hands or if I have some side dish and thus don't want to dirty my hands.
