The Joker. Such an awesome villain. A few months back I spent a few weeks watching movies I had heard were really great. Shawshank redemption, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Requiem for a Dream, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. All were brilliant. I heard good things about Donnie Darko, so I hired it. I heard it was an intellectual movie that really made you think. I watched it & thought it was average, maybe decent.
It seems to try & throw stuff in to make it seem mysterious, like the fat guy in the track suit. Now I heard in the comm entry its an FBI agent, but there is nothing to indicate that in the movie, so most people would have no idea who he was or what he was supposed to represent. Also, I still have no idea what the cellardoor reference was all about. I was expecting some big revelation in the cellar of old lady deaths house or something. It has been awhile since I watched it, so I might give it another shot, but everything just panned out with no massive twist. Even when we finally see his sisters boyfriend & the surprise that comes with it, I was just like "heh". People say its subjective & open to interpretation, which makes it so good.
I hate films like that I suppose. I reckon I could write a decent movie with themes such as schizophrenia & time travel, have a talking giraffe then throw in a random guy with scuba gear on to stand in the background for a few shots, a few random words that are emphasized through the movie & say its up to the audience to interpret it.
