A majority of people i know have cars and never worked a day in their lives, i work and help my parents out with car insurance, but they bought me a car, im by no means jealous of these people i do think they are spoiled though. What say you OT?

Personally, if I was a parent (and assuming I had the means) I might consider the car. Insurance is the kids problem. Gotta learn about bills sometime. Unfortunately for me, I'm not getting the benefit of either...

I don't think it necessarily means the child is spoiled but it could be an indicator. Though it might be an instance of spoiling that also doesn't make the child spoiled by itself. Anyhow, guess I was spoiled and by other factors, such as I when started driving gas was less than a dollar and now I don't drive anywhere unless I have to.

My parents bought me a car and I feel hella spoiled. I'm giving them $100 out of every paycheck but it's still going to take like 8+ years to get anywhere near close to paying them back.

I had to buy my car from my brother, pay insurance, pay rent and will have to pay for most of my college expenses when it begins in the Fall. I'm sure as f*ck jealous of the type of people you mentioned.

My grandma is giving me her old car when she finds and buys a new one. It feels pretty good actually.

IMO yes, that's being spoiled, but I suppose that's a relative term really. I've always had to work hard and pay for my own stuff. Sure my parents help me and buy some stuff, but something like a car? No. Other people who're more used to the size of such gifts might not consider getting a care to be spoiled. Oh and.. In Denmark, where I happen to live, we pay TWICE as much for cars as our neighbours (Germany/Sweden), so getting a new car in Denmark from your parents is... ridiculous xD

Guess it depends on the situation. I bought my first car out of my own money, but my parents paid for the insurance. I live out in the sticks so driving is essential. I also had to drive 50 miles a day (25 each way) to college, paying for my own fuel - living in Britain fuel is damn expensive.

Depends on whether or not they deserved it. If they're a good kid, hard working, then I'd say they're not spoiled.

I bought cars for our two girls and pay the insurance (in exchange for them making the honor roll every semester in HS). I also pay their college tuition and the rent on their apartment. Sure, they're spoiled. I don't see any reason to deprive them of things that I can provide for them. I don't believe in that whole "Make them earn every penny and they'll appreciate the value of a dollar" crap. I think that ends up with the kids taking any crappy job they can get just so they can buy whatever junk they want, instead of planning out a nice career path.

A kid being spoiled would whine to their parents for not buying a Mercades if they were given a car and insurance.

I really hate the word "spoiled". The bottom line is everyone is spoiled to someone. It's completely subjective. Spoiled is just in the eyes of the jealous beholder.

I think the child's behavior is a better indicator. If they act like the divas we see on that MTV show, then they are definitely spoiled. I was lucky enough to have been given a car with insurance after I graduated high school but I never acted like a douchbag towards my parents.

Depends on the car I think. I know kids who got BMWs and Mustangs from their parents for their 16th birthdays before they could even drive. I think that's spoiled. A while after I got my license, my mother bought a prius and handed me down the minivan. I don't think that's spoiled, but I certainly feel appreciative and fortunate.

I get my kids pretty much what they want all they have to do is make the honor roll and do well in the sport of their choice. They do have chores around the house and they must be done. When they get their allowance the must budget their money. So far they have done well and my son is really good with his money everything he has learned he uses. Now if for some reason don't pull their weight then they will have do do with out and go buy their own things. I always tell them hard work and being smart brings rewards and they see it when I get my check and how I spend my money.

They need to be well rounded mentally and physically. Sports teaches hard work on the physical side and team work. It is also good for social interaction many smart kids in my kids classes are socially retarded and wimpy. Many kids doing well in sports have issues with their school work and are dumb as rocks.

I wouldn't say spoiled necessarily. That's definitely generous, depends on the kid's attitude. If the kid is a good person and works hard anyway, maybe they deserve it. If the kid is a piece of sh*t, then I would say they're spoiled.

Depends on their behaviour IMO. If they've worked hard and got it as a reward, I don't see it as being spoiled.

Spoiled is not a negative term.

Spoiled in this context means to accustom someone to goods they don't inherently deserve. Nothing wrong with that.

Just like when a man says "I'm going to spoil my wife tonight and take her shopping" Sometimes people want to do something for loved ones that make them happy even if they don't particularly deserve it. Now, if the receiving party doesn't appreciate, then they become a brat.

People have different interpretations of spoiled. It can either mean just that: privileged in the sense that one is able to indulge in unnecessary luxuries, but even then that's subjective due to different lifestyles in general (e.g., third world country as opposed to a first). Or it can be drawn out to be derogatory and characterize the reciever as being unappreciative and selfish. I don't even think there's a concrete definition for the term in this context.

I think it is a little spoiled, but i've been working since i was 12 and had to pay for everything. Buti t really depends on how the individual reacts. Some kids act like they are entitled to a car and sometimes complain about the car they are given. Also getting a hand-me-down car is not as spoiled as being given a brand new car.

I see it as a distinction of being spoiled and being spoiled rotten/a spoiled brat, and the two can be complete opposites.

I'm impressed at the number of "No" answers. Lots of spoiled kids at Gamespot (which I'm not surprised). My car was passed down to me from my grandparents and I have to pay for insurance - and I still feel spoiled. My girlfriend worked entirely for her own car (she's 19 and is already paying off some fancy 2009 VW).
