In most cases I cannot be arsed, but in some cases I can but don't get round to it.

I stopped caring about a lot of things about a decade ago and learned to just take care of my own little patch of reality.

1. In order for there to be a solution, a solution must be found.

2. In order for a solution to be found, there must first be a problem acknowledged for which a solution is required.

3. For one to acknowledge a problem, one must first be concerned about whether or not there is a problem.

4. For one to be concerned about whether or not there is a problem, one must not be apathetic about whether or not there is a problem.

Therefore:

5. If one is apathetic, there cannot be a solution.

6. If there can be no solution, then nothing can be a solution.

Therefore:

8. Apathy cannot be a solution.

Therefore:

9. Apathy is not a solution.

Exactly, and you can't have a solution until there is a problem.

"No such thing as apathy IMO. You just bottle up yore emotions till you snap." Cool generalization, bro. Some people are naturally apathetic, I believe. I have a pretty small range of emotions and the way I express them even smaller. I'm not the kind of person who gets visually excited (in either sense of the word) when I see a new game released, find 20 bucks on the street, or have an attractive woman strike up a conversation with me, I just kinda brush it off and chalk it up to a random event that occurred in that particular day. Good fortune, sure, but it's nothing that hasn't happened to nearly everyone else at some point in their lives, so why get excited over it? Well, I'm pretty much the same when "bad" things happen. Girlfriend left me? Meh. Lost my job? *shrug*. It happens and emotionally attaching yourself to any given situation will just make things worse and make your thought process less clinical. So yeah, I'm an apathetic person, to other people's supposed "problems" and in my own life.

Apathy is never a solution to anything. Apathy is the main reason why Western society is currently going to hell in a handbag with an express ticket.

No, if everyone is apathetic we would still be living in caves and we wouldn't be able to have this wonderful conversation because no one would have bothered to invent computers, there is also a good chance we would be extinct as our greatest strength is analysing a problem then forming a possible solution to it, without that we are pretty much defenceless.

YIKES! but also, yeppers. Specifically (pointing my pointy head to USA) (pee eew, what's that stinky smell) in our 'free society'.

I don't care if you don't care, but I can't become apathetic. In my society I'm supposed to vote regardless of the rhetoric. We may have a right not to care, but I still want a right to buy my own brand of underwear. It's decidedly pathetic to decide to be apathetic.

Apathy doesn't mean you're lazy. I'm apathetic, but I have plenty of motivation to go do stuff. To me, apathy is more like being 'withdrawn,' or 'secluded.' Not really caring about what goes on.

How can you have motivation to do something if you do not care about doing that something? To use a mundane example you are motivated to get a computer, yet you do not care if you get one or not, can't you see the contradiction here? Why would you want to get a computer if having one doesn't concern you, it wouldn't even enter your mind as a possibility. simple fact is apathy inhibits productivity and progress.

Methinks you just feel overwhelmed by life. That is the wrong attitude, yet nonetheless, hard to escape from, especially with a poor introduction to the world.

Yes I believe so. Why do think it wouldn't be? I mean what would society be like today if nobody gave a **** about anything but themselves? Theft, murder, and rape would be pretty rampant and we would make very little progress as a society as a whole.

Maybe not but it would most certainly be more prevalent. I mean what right now is stopping you from going and stealing some guys Lamborghini? It's a nice car that you want, you don't particularly care or give any thought about the other guy because he just does not come into your consideration. Now you could say the law is stopping you, but I think it is pretty safe to say in a society where no one cares about anything but themselves that there would be no law or punishments, of course the other guy could come after you I suppose which may make you think twice about doing it, but hey, you have the car and he doesn't, sounds like a pretty good escape plan to me.

@ bean-with-bacon I never said I don't care about other people at all, I mean, really, of course I give a rip about the people I care about. What I meant was, I might not pay attention to something or really care about something or want to hear someone's life story or whatever. I don't give a rip about things I find stupid. For example, at work, when I make the pancakes, you have to arrange them on the plate in a certain way, but really, who cares, it's just pancakes and it would be ridiculous to get all pissy because "someone arranged the pancakes wrong." And when I said "Actually, yeah, pretty much," I was being sarcastic because what you said was completely ridiculous. Besides, what's wrong with being, what you call, 'selfish?' You have to love yourself and take care of yourself too. If you never did anything besides putting others before yourself, you'd be really miserable. Plus, it isn't 'loving' to bend to a person's every whim. 'Loving' would be to know when it's sensible to call it quits. A loving person doesn't spoil a person, because spoiling harms the person being spoiled.

That's perfectly fine, I don't care much about things I consider to be trivial or inconsequential either and I think it would be a much better world if people cared less about stupid little things that ultimately affect very little or are unimportant in the grand scheme of things and put their focus on larger problems that affect us all. And I completely agree you need to take care of yourself first, I would not consider that selfish, only you said you didn't give a rip about other people, I took that to mean you only cared about yourself, obviously I was incorrect and I apologise, but perhaps you could try expressing yourself a little more clearly in the future. :)

I guess it could be a solution to some things... If you've become to a bit more apathetic towards a painful past, then maybe that's when you understand that it's time to let go.
