The world is projected to hit seven billion people by October 31, 2011 according to the UNFPA. The actual number may or may not have already happened, these are estimates after all, but the number is symbolic: How long is the world sustainable on its existing resources if it is sustainable at all with its existing population? Will innovation save the human race? What about collateral species? Is there a solution?

And are population controls, be it government-enforced such as the one-child rule in China or better access to contraceptives, a possible solution?

Regardless of the implementation, yes or no as to viability?

I approve of it, it's just plain ignorance that people complain about the environment whilst cutting down the trees to build power plants to meet the demands of the houses which have been built where trees used to stand. I recently learned that not having a dog is like not owning a Land Rover Discovery because of the resources it requires to keep a dog alive.

That's China. And that's not really enforced in the western part of the country or in the rural parts because families need children to help live an agriculturally-based lifestyle. And population growth isn't completely suffocating the earth like many people think. Sure, it's not great but you have to actually look into it and get an opinion supported by some evidence rather than just assume that more people means we're going to eat the entire earth.

Developed countries like the U.S. already have negative birth rates, the problems are with asia and africa, there should be restrictions there as they obviously need them.

Decreasing populations will be the real problems of the future, not increasing. Many demographers agree that the world population will peak, then start to decrease, by the end of this century.

A small younger population relative to older brings with it a host of issues. Tack on an ever increasing life expectancy and we could face some real economic challenges that could put our current global troubles to shame.

The entire population could fit into France, and live with space to spare... so I don't think space is an issue. The UN lower estimate for 2100 is 6 billion as global fertility is falling in numbers.

people need have common sence to specially have no more then 3 kids... What kills is these people who have 10+. NOW if something happens where you end up having triplets or so ok. BUT god dang. How many kids do one need? To be able sustain life we have to mass produce everything and GMOs everything.

I really don't have a issue with 7 billion people Plus. What bothers me is

1: people having 10+ kids...

2: kill offs of wildlife Because humans.

3: mass production of food stuff them with growth hormones ect to keep up

My biggest one is really num 2: just other day they was saying they was going have to do other mass kill off of deer because the population and to many cars are getting hit... Well Maybe IF you didn't come tear down their forest and didn't build roads every single place. You wouldn't have a problem and let wolfs and predators remain free. wildlife would sustain it self. Then there are many other examples out there for other animals like kill off of seals, wolfs, coyotes ect because humans want every piece of land be theirs...

Im no veggian or that i eat meat SO don't think im like anti kill or something But the way i see it You want go kill mass other living things because you need more land. Why not go kill your own and take their own?

NOW for china on the other hand. China is just about same size of u.s. YET they have 4x more people then us... There need be something done.

I think there was a report that suggested that the human population of the globe imploded as the oil industry came to life, as if the oil industry triggered some type of baby boomer effect. The report suggested that if the oil is taken away, the population will decrease as dramatic as it rose when oil came the main source of energy consumption.

Who knows? One thing I know is that the mega cities, which are now ghost towns, that China continues to build to create the illusion of a booming industry can house a good portion of the population if it gets to the points of overload. However, the resources to sustain your own life could certainly become scarce with each billion that accumulates.

space to spear where arms length? or shoulder to shoulder?

just do little simple math for you...

france is 210,026 sq miles.

a male (since they are little bigger) arms length is avarge is 5.8ft

5280 feet in a mile times 210,026 = 1.1????? billion feet= only 191M humans...

FAIL.

NOW if you want to take 1.1????? billion feet divide between 7 billlion you get a Grand total of space per person

For the hell of it i round it up

0.16 Feet per person.

WOOT I got more spce then EVER!

MORE of a a reason was. Before the baby boom Everything was nice and happy like the movies. Everyone wanted a job had one, mother was a stay home full time mother taking care of kids, Money wasn't issue. everyone was happy and wanted more. NOW it's not like that. Most family's mother and father work now, jobs are little harder come by, WHO needs the extra stress of a kid?

Watch this video before you wet your pants, it does refer to mega cities with the density of paris and it is purely hypothetical.

If you're going to do "simple math", do it properly.

You forgot to square your 5,280 ft. Multiply your answer by a factor of 5280 ft and you should be left with ~ 836 ft^2.

EDIT: I am not saying that is an adequate amount of space, just that people should do their damn math properly if they're going to lord it over people. Jesus f*** Christ.

EDIT 2: Your math has made me very, very angry - almost livid. IN PART BECAUSE YOU CALLED SOMEONE ELSE OUT ON A FAIL.

He tried to compare the arm length of the average male to the area of the damn country

SO IT'S NOT ONLY AN ARITHMETIC ERROR

He conceptually didn't distinguish the two

If I there is one bloody more control population/whow is me there is too many people threads

I'm going to start population controlling some creators.

We are no where near overpopulation yet.

Especially the industialized nations(Europe, North America, S Korea, Japan)

The US could double or tripple its population and still be golden

Could it be a problem for China & India, yeah maybe, but I don't bloody live there nor intend to

simple solution..

we simply let nature takes its course. when we do ahve too many let death and illness fix it for us.

not as clean but sometimes ignorance is bliss.

and i mena the first place thatd go under is india for sure. and the sooner.. the better

less economic squaller in that antion is what they desperately need and less people means more space n money to go around :P

The only option is to expand outside Earth--seems almost impossible today, but maybe not within the next half-century.

I don't think we will need it. They said 30-40 years ago that there would be widespread famine, instability and lower quality of life because of the increasing population. We now have well over 2 times as may people on the earth as 1970 and the quailty of life as a species has increased substancially by every measure. I think we will be fine.

The only option? I dont think we're at a stage where we need to focus on overpopulation. Why don't we let nature takes its course like others said and wait till we actually need to do something and hopefully by then technology will be good enough to fix any problems.
