The US flag is a symbol, nothing else. It used to represent freedom and liberty.
It seems that if you wear a lapel pin with the flag, people just assume you belive in the same values it's supposed to represent.
Yes, I do, because I'm not some hippy liberal whose to lazy to take 30 seconds out of their day to honor an age old tradition of the nation which has so happily accepted you.

you're right, in fact, we should also salute it the way they did originally.
Do you promise to do what the flag tells you to do? Well, do you?SpaceMoose
Congratulations on utterly missing the point.

That looks awesome. I am going to be jumping on this bandwagon.

It's an American right to not have to.

So basically, you're accusing them of being lazy hippie liberals whilst claiming that "the nation" has accepted them.
Lol at people taking my comment seriously. The internet sucks at projecting sarcasm. Penguin_dragon
You didn't even bother to indicate your sarcasm. How are we supposed to know that you're being sarcastic when this forum is filled with people who actually think like that?

Well sorry, to me it looked too absurd to be taken so seriously.
I'll be sure to take my time in posting someway as to indicate sarcasm in my future posts. [/sarcasm]
Yes?
I pledge to the flag because it represents my country, my family, and the troops that fight for my country. Complaining about the pledge of allegiance, to me , is like how people file a lawsuit because someone accidental stepped on their foot.
If those not from the US want to know something about the US flag and our praise for it this might help:

People like you make me proud to be American. Your from the UK you wouldn't understand but that doesn't mean I am gunna criticize all Europeans because of a few words you say. Sounds like you drain your own will to live.
I think talking to an inanimate object to become a citizen is absurd. It doesn't hold authority the way a person does.
In Canada i think it makes a lot more sense. We pledge allegiance to our Queen, a real person.
The pledge should be to either the head of state or the government overall. not a flag

The flag represents our country as a whole(everything it stands for).
"I do it, but mostly only because I don't want dirty looks." whoever put this should know i'm giving them a dirty look right now.
The flag is symbolic of our country. When you pledge allegigence to the flag your really pledging alligence to your country.
kingyotoX
So does that mean the government or the land mass or the Constitution or what?...
