Poll: What will be the downfall of mankind?

Well let's see, religion has been around for. . . .oh. . . . .about fifty thousand years or so, and humanity still seems to be doing fine, so I doubt that.

Politics have been around a while as well, but if humanity ends itself, it will most likely have something to do with politics.

Yes, but how advanced has the world's weaponry been for most of that time? Various religious folk throughout the history of the world have always had the desire to rid the world of heretics, jumpstart the Apocalypse, etc., they just haven't had the means to do it. Had the the religious wars of a thousand years ago been fought with todays weapons, but yesterday's ideologies, the world would be a much different place (although, conversely, the Bush Administration's current practices of indefinite detention without charge and acts of torture such as waterboarding do owe quite a bit to the Spanish Inquisition).

Well, now we have scores of religous fanatics who DO have the means to wipe out humanity, coupled with a perfect willingnes to die themselves. Not a good situation.

Then again, if a certain other religion hadn't plunged all of Europe into nearly a thousand years of almost no scientific advancement whatsoever, perhaps that scenario would have happend much sooner. Ironic.

Well, we've had this advanced weaponry for about 400 years, and still no religious idiots trying to destroy the world. . . .but we have had plenty of wars where religion wasn't involved. . . in fact, in the past 100 years alone, conflicts that are completely unrelated to religion have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of millions of people. . . .

I was referring to atomic/nuclear/chemical weapons, which have been around much less than a hundred years, and I'm well aware that wars happen for secular reasons, but what other cause besides relgion would motivate someone to be a suicide bomber?

Also, while plenty of other religions are eagerly awaiting the end of the world (including a large percentage of Christians, at least in America) I was primarily referring to Islam as the main religion that threatens humanity, or at least large portions of it. Surely, as a conservative, you won't deny that.
