Oh what Fun this will be ...

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gnrH1I5OMi2psDdZ2cWrmQlVfyXgD92FPIOG0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Scientists say they are a step closer to developing materials that could render people and objects invisible.

Researchers have demonstrated for the first time they were able to cloak three-dimensional objects using artificially engineered materials that redirect light around the objects. Previously, they only have been able to cloak very thin two-dimensional objects.

The findings, by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, led by Xiang Zhang, are to be released later this week in the journals Nature and Science.

The new work moves scientists a step closer to hiding people and objects from visible light, which could have broad applications, including military ones.

People can see objects because they scatter the light that strikes them, reflecting some of it back to the eye. Cloaking uses materials, known as metamaterials, to deflect radar, light or other waves around an object, like water flowing around a smooth rock in a stream.

Metamaterials are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite. They are designed to bend visible light in a way that ordinary materials don't. Scientists are trying to use them to bend light around objects so they don't create reflections or shadows.

It differs from stealth technology, which does not make an aircraft invisible but reduces the cross-section available to radar, making it hard to track.

The research was funded in part by the U.S. Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation's Nano-Scale Science and Engineering Center.

Surely they've been doing this for a while now? I remember reading something on this in "New Scientist" at least 4 months ago.

I'm guessing this technology won't be mass produced and sold at your local supermarket...

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was illegalized for civilians.

Think of all the robbery (and other sneaky-ness) that would take place. Still, it's really cool.

When I get one, I want to hide in a closet and jump out at people! But wait, that wouldn't work, because I'm invisible! :o

I'm writing some lame posts tonight. I feel really dizzy for some reason.....

Oh god invisibilty will ruin everything. All we need is an invisible nuclear bomb being shipped into my backlyard then BOOM me = dead... I think it will bring a lot more harm then good once its perfected.

That's why it's a bad idea. If any get out of the government then you can expect a series or murders where the murderer will never be caught.

The article made a mistake. Very thin objects are still 3 dimensional no matter how thin they are.

Not necessarily. If only a few people have one, I imagine it might be a bad idea to commit a murder with one on, in fact, because that would narrow the suspect list down considerably, really.

And it's not as if someone with it on would be impossible to find; they would show up plain as day on any thermal scanner.

This, my friends is a bad idea. Other than military or other productive uses (law enforcement etc.), I hope it will never get to the public. But, you know it eventually will.

Oh, joy. Prepare for some mother f***ing invisible abrahams or crap like that. You know we've gone too far when you've got an invisible tank.

this technology will forever shift the balance of power, security and in the wrong hands will add a new fear to a list of threats in hostile zones, warfronts, and areas of military interest. for example if this were a game of Weaponsmith(offensive) vs. the Armorsmith (defensive), even though this tech can benefit both the Armorsmith will have to come up with something to counter it. Which means new research in optics (and optical counters in newer versions of stealth), personal infantry radars, radar counters etc. etc. etc... thats if this technology goes mainstream in military tech (which it most likely will).
