I wonder what OT atheists think about this. And whipassmt for that matter.

Using scripture from theĀ Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus' disciples were that someone outside their group was doing good, according to a report from Vatican Radio.

They complain, the Pope said in his homily, because they say, If he is not one of us, he cannot do good. If he is not of our party, he cannot do good. And Jesus corrects them: Do not hinder him, he says, let him do good. The disciples, Pope Francis explains, were a little intolerant, closed off by the idea of possessing the truth, convinced that those who do not have the truth, cannot do good. This was wrong . . . Jesus broadens the horizon. Pope Francis said, The root of this possibility of doing good that we all have is in creation

Pope Francis went further in his sermon to say:

"The Lord created us in His image and likeness, and we are the image of the Lord, and He does good and all of us have this commandment at heart: do good and do not do evil. All of us. But, Father, this is not Catholic! He cannot do good. Yes, he can... "The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! Father, the atheists? Even the atheists. Everyone!".. We must meet one another doing good. But I dont believe, Father, I am an atheist! But do good: we will meet one another there.

I'm glad to see the Pope say such things. We need men of humble peace in power when it comes to religious organizations. I'm not a believe myself, but I do feel religious leaders have to speak for the good of all people, since that cannot truly know what will happen beyond this world, if something indeed exists.Ā

He just took the post a few weeks ago. For all we know he may start pushing to get the priests who were molesting children booted and arrested over the next few years.

That's why I said "for all we know" since none of us have a crystal ball or directly work for Pope Francis in the Vatican.

This is a major plus to this pope. he is unwillingly acknowledging as far more important the idea of well doing than the "being religious". I smurfing love it.

I suppose it's good to have a relatively progressive Pope, but basically, a man whose opinions I don't care about, that heads an organisation I don't belong to, tells me that i won't go to hell, which I don't believe in, if I do good things. And nary a meh was given.

Pope was referring to non-catholics, topic creator asked for atheist opinions specifically. Problem?

Really? I grew up Protestant and was always told that you must be saved to go to heaven. Obviously Catholocism and Protestantism are very different but I don't really see how people who aren't saved can go to heaven.

It's ok to blantantly deny the existence of God; however, Adam and Steve are going to hell, even if they pray to God every night before snuggling in bed.

am extremely appalled that simply stating a phrase such as this does not make him "legit' or "good". in all hopes, this is likely a plea to appeal to the growing irreligious masses who gave, understandably so, gained anger at the catholic church

Call me cynical, but I can't help but think this is just a PR campaign-- like Buddy Christ, just not as funny or interesting.

Once the Catholic church stops c*ck blocking gay marriage, denying contraceptive use in third world countries and stops systematically covering up pedophilia I might change my tune.

Yeah, he's got a lot of cleaning up to do, that's for sure. I'm rooting for him to turn out to be a positive influence, though. Heaven knows they could use one, and the signs so far have been good.

Did you read those verses? You can't get any other interpretation out of them. So if anyone thinks I'm wrong, fine (lulz), but if you (plural) disagree, don't call yourself a Christian. It would be like me calling myself a liberal as an American - it's simply false.

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them any less of a Christian. If you believe in God and in Christ, you are a Christian. Beyond that, it is matters of disagreement about specific aspects of Christianity.

That would be true if we were talking about, say, issues of eschatology (just bear with me, as I doubt you know about the Premillennial, Amillennial, and Postmillennial divide). But we're talking about one of the extreme top issues, that is, how salvation is obtained. The Pope just said it could be obtained outside of Christ, and through works - this contradicts those passages I already mentioned, plus Ephesians 2:8-9 and Titus 3:5, which both make it clear works cannot and do not play any part in salvation.

My point is that theyĀ don'tĀ believe in Christ, because their Christ is willing to accept people by their merit alone. But Romans 3:10, Romans 3:23, etc. makes it clear no one has any merit. Christ, Christ alone - the only way of salvation.
