http://www.secularism.org ? I'm not going to buy into articles from the religious sites and I'm not going to buy into the sites that already have a nit to pick with the religious folk either.duxuphttp://www.catholic.net/index.php?option=zenit&id=26693
I remember watching Penn and Teller: Bull! the other day and they were talking about the Vatican and the Pope. I didn't trust his word before but now I just despise him.

Here's what probably made people think he's blaming atheists:
Benedict XVI: Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where is existence is denied? If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the "final authority," and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible.
Quite honestly, I think he might be but the statement seems to be more about the increased global interest in materialism over spiritualism than anything else.
I think you misunderstand.
I think he means that by wanting more than we are given upon creation we have moved on to the point where our advancement requires us to polute the world, and he means that atheists, not believing in god, and not being happy with what they were given, are the ones who have had the ambition in this world to push humanity forward, and thus they are at fault. I hope i'm not the only one who understood that -_-;
Its a low blow if he really means anything byit, but I think its true to an extent that you cant deny.
Hmm that website is pretty biased and taking that statement out of context. What he mean't (I assume) was that lack of faith means that man is the highest authority you will ever have to answer to. So since you expect to just die and disappear you try to attain as much as you possibly can while living... that's what I got out of that quote and it does make sense. It goes long great with the expression *Live your life to the fullest*

You can see the full context here. I don't see anything in the full quote that goes against the idea that he's basically (though perhaps inadvertently) saying that people who deny the existence of God are the ones who are materialistic and greedy.

I can absolutely deny it. A hell of a lot of scientific progress was the result of CHRISTIANS and people of other religions.

I see, if that's the case then he is out of line for the most part, it doesn't make his statement false but what he is doing is that lovely little thing called generalizing! While forgetting that many many Christians have been and are motivated by greed.Furthermore, who is more likely to think that humans are inherently better than the other animals? A religious person who thinks that god created the rest of nature for our good, or an atheist who rejects notions that we are divinely favored?
Umm, it's ATHEISTS who think that mankind is the divine authority? Most of the atheists I know are humbled by the power of nature and our inability to triumph over it.
We have nothing to learn about environmentalism from this hypocrite.
Oh that takes the cake... I wonder if he shares the same opinion on Gore and Obama. Mr. 20x the average energy bill and Mr. Use thousands of gallons to go plant a tree on earth day.

Pope is dumb if I take it at face value. Don't care either way. By the way OP, it's called climate change now.

First of all people in general believe they are better than other animals and it's true, we are at the top of the food chain incase you didn't know. Secondly what makes you think religious people don't acknowledge the power of nature?

1) We AREN'T better than the other animals. "Top of the food chain" doesn't mean ****, particularly when the food chain is constantly changing.
2) I never said that religious people don't acknowledge the power of nature. But if you find someone who thinks that we are better than the rest of the animals, that the rest of the earth was put here divinely for us to use, then you are probably talking to a theist. That whole attitude comes along as part of the package once you accept that we are special, that we have god's grace, and that the other animals do not. Once you accept that we are god's "chosen people", it's a lot more easy to stop giving a damn about anything that is NOT god's chosen people.

And then his Popemobile puts out all those greenhouse gases.

No it's due to centuries of burning incense at church.
That too.seriously , soo hypocritical christianity teaches to love and respect all fellow human beings regardless of anything , especially their religion or lack thereoff, and then the pope says " ITS THEM ATHIESTS FAULT!" .. yeah.. ok... its sad that the "leader" of an orgianization is soo blatendly breaking one of the main ideologies of the group. itd be like the leader of a anti drug group that shoots up heroine everyday. The pope is a joke.

1. The food chain is constantly changing with one constant.. us being at the top. If you don't think we are better than other animals then all I can do is respect your opinion, I am of the personal opinion we are.
2. I know many atheist and religious people who believe we are above animals and I agree with them, I agree with your final sentance though, it's easy to see others as unworthy when you believe you are the chosen one.
Um.. I'm sure that not everyone who strove for the progression of humanity was atheist. What you've said makes it sound like only athiests can materialistic, and that's so wrong.I think you misunderstand.
