I live in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Vancouver was first settled in the 1860's as a result of the Fraser River Gold Rush. Prior to the Great Vancouver Fire of 1886 the area known today as Gastown was the main hub of human activity. However, with the fire started as an attempt to clear brush fire, it quickly escalated due to the winds. Only two of the main buildings in Gastown were still standing after the fire was out. Within four days the city began rebuilding itself after which a firehall was constructed, the first police force in the area was formed, and the city was rebuilt with modern water, electricity and streetcar systems.

A sketch of the Great Vancouver Fire and the area surrounding it

Prior to the 1980s the economy of the city relied on Vancouver's resource sectors such as forestry, mining, fishign and agriculture. However it has diversified over the last 30 years, partly due to Expo 86 which was held on Vancouver's centenial and provided a much needed boost to the city with more than 22 million people attending the exhibition, and is today consistently ranked as one of the top three most livable cities in the world. Metro Vancouver has become the third largest film production location in North America after Los Angeles and New York, earning it the nickname 'Hollywood North'.

Global Air photo of Expo 86

(You can see the location of Expo 86 in this photo at the end of False Creek underneath the big white domed stadium known as BC Place)

Global Air Photo 2009

(The area where Expo 86 once was is now a mix of grass and parking lot but a few of the Expo buildings still exist. The large dyson sphere located on the land mass at the tail end of False Creek is now called The Telus World of Science and above BC Place a stadium for the Vancouver Canucks hockey team was built named GM Place which will be renamed Canada Place for the 2010 Olympics)

As stated, Vancouver/Whistler are going to be the hosts of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games which will again provide a much needed boost to certain sections of the city (Including Gastown which is today located near the heart of the downtown Eastside, regarded by many to be one of the most run down, drug addicted, poor, and violent places in Canada.)

A panorama image of Vancouver at dusk

(In the image above if you scroll all the way to the left past BC Place and the Telus World of Science dyson sphere you will come across a large number of building cranes. This is the area where the 2010 Vancouver Olympics Village will be)

What the Olympic Village will look like after completion

Another Panorama of Vancouver

The skytrain, originally built for Expo 86, has extended itself far beyond it's original area. Today there are currently 2 different lines built and a third being built for the Olympics that will take you from the Vancouver airport to the heart of Vancouver in less than 40 minutes. There is also a third line in the planning stages that is going to begin construction at the end of 2010/early 2011 and extensions to the current lines to the University of BC and Langley. There is also a streetcar system being built that will begin it's first run during the Olympics and eventually extend to through Gastown, to the Waterfront or the heart of Downtown Vancouver, and all the way to Stanley Park. The Westcoast Express is another mass transit system that uses the train tracks to shuttle people all the way from Mission to Waterfront Station and the Interurban Railway, which will probably be coming back online sometime in 2010/2011 after a long period of inactivity, is currently in the planning stages and will take residents from the farthest areas in Greater Vancouver south of the Fraser River and meet up with the Skytrain at Scott Road Station. The Seabus is used to traverse the distance across the Burrard Inlet to North Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains.

NYC New York is the most populous city in the United States, and the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is among the most populous urban areas in the world. A leading global city, New York exerts a powerful influence over worldwide commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment. As host of the United Nations headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. The city is often referred to as New York City to differentiate it from the state of New York, of which it is a part. New York is notable among American cities for its high use of mass transit, most of which runs 24 hours per day, and for the overall density and diversity of its population. In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoken in the city and 36% of its population was born outside the United States.[7][8] The city is sometimes referred to as "The City that Never Sleeps", while other nicknames include Gotham[9] and the Big Apple.[10] New York was founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624. The settlement was called New Amsterdam until 1664 when the colony came under English control.[11] New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.[12] It has been the country's largest city since 1790.[13] Many neighborhoods and landmarks in the city have become world-famous. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, has been a dominant global financial center since World War II and is home to the New York Stock Exchange. The city has been home to several of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building and the twin towers of the former World Trade Center. New York is the birthplace of many cultural movements, including the Harlem Renaissance in literature and visual art, abstract expressionism (also known as the New York School) in painting, and hip hop,[14] punk,[15] salsa, disco and Tin Pan Alley in music. It is the home of Broadway theater. Brooklyn (Kings County: Pop. 2,528,050)[77] is the city's most populous borough and was an independent city until 1898. Brooklyn is known for its cultural, social and ethnic diversity, an independent art scene, distinct neighborhoods and a unique architectural heritage. It is also the only borough outside of Manhattan with a distinct downtown area. The borough features a long beachfront and Coney Island, established in the 1870s as one of the earliest amusement grounds in the country Wiki

El Paso Texas, stands on the Rio Grande across the border of Juarez, Mexico. it was also knowns as the real "Wild West". It earned its nickname "Six Shooter Capital" because of its lawlessness, with "scores of saloons, dance halls, gambling establishments, and houses of prostitution lin[ing] the main streets". El Paso hired a town marshal with rough reputation, Dallas Stoudenmire, who was known to shoot first and ask questions later. The "Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight" took place here on April 14, 1881.

And it also saw the Mexican Revolution as Cuidad Juarez was the center of intense fighting by Pancho Villa.

New Orleans (wiki)

Colonial Era-"Before the founding of what would become known as the city of New Orleans, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who took advantage of Bayou St. John (known to the natives as Bayouk Choupique) which flowed into Lake Pontchartrain and the short distance between its headwaters and the Mississippi River to create a portage. This became an important trade route. French explorers, fur trappers, and traders arrived in the area by the 1690s, some making settlements amid the Native American village of thatched huts along the bayou. By the end of the decade a French encampment called "Port Bayou St. Jean" was near the head of the Bayou, and a small fort "St. Jean" was established at the mouth of the Bayou in 1701. These early European settlements are now within the limits of the city of New Orleans, though predating its official date of founding."

Civil War-"Early in the American Civil War New Orleans was captured by the Union without a battle in the city itself, and hence was spared the destruction suffered by many other cities of the American South. It retains a historical flavor with a wealth of 19th century structures far beyond the early colonial city boundaries of the French Quarter."

Modern Day/21st Century-"The city suffered from the effects of a major hurricane on and after August 29, 2005, as Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the gulf coast near the city. In the aftermath of the storm, what has been called "the largest civil engineering disaster in the history of the United States" flooded the majority of the city when the levee and floodwall system protecting New Orleans failed."

Probably the only notable things are being the birthplace of John Walsh (of America's Most Wanted fame), the deathplaces of William H. Seward (who purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire) and Harriet Tubman (of the Underground Railroad), and for being where the first execution by electric chair took place (1890, William Kemmler).

Copenhagen, capitol of Denmark.

Copenhagen is located on the eastern shore of the island of Zealand(Sjælland),

We got our asses kicked by the royal british navy a couple of hundreds years back. They stole all our ships afterwards. We kinda liked Napoleon, which was a big no-no.

Copenhagen has been directly in and out of wars since the 12th century, vikings, bewildered swedes, ze germunz, all that riff raff. Pretty peaceful now, though.

A lot of stuff in copenhagen is fairly old, some dating back to the renaissance. Its all well-kept and maintained in their original form.

There is a naked mermaid overlooking our harbours. This shot was taken in a rare moment, since there are no japanese tourists mounting her.

From its humble origins as a fishing village to its heyday as the glittering capital of theDanish Empire, to its current position as one of the world's premier design capitals, the stories and characters of Copenhagen's history can be discovered in its sumptuous palaces, copper-roofed town houses and atmospheric cobbled squares. In short, a brief summary of Copenhagen´s history would be 2000 pages long.

Detroit is a major port city on the Detroit River, in the Midwest region of the United States. Located north of Windsor, Ontario(HI CANADA!!!!!!!), Detroit is the only major U.S. city that looks south to Canada. It was founded on July 24, 1701 by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac.

Known as the world's traditional automotive center, "Detroit" is a metonym for the American automobile industry and an important source of popular music legacies celebrated by the city's two familiar nicknames, The Motor City and Motown. Other nicknames emerged in the twentieth century, including Rock City (after the Kiss song "Detroit Rock City"), Arsenal of Democracy (during World War II), The D, D-Town, Hockeytown (a phrase officially owned by the city's NHL club, the Red Wings), and The 3-1-3 (its telephone area code).

We also take great pride in being the most dangerous city in the U.S(also miserable).

http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/23/most-dangerous-cities-life****real-estate-dangerous-american-cities.html

Detroit is one of 13 American metropolitan areas that are home to professional teams representing the four major sports in North America. All these teams but one play within the city of Detroit itself (the NBA's Detroit Pistons and the WNBA's Detroit Shock both play in suburban Auburn Hills at The Palace of Auburn Hills). There are three active major sports venues within the city: Comerica Park (home of the Major League Baseball team Detroit Tigers), Ford Field (home of the NFL's Detroit Lions), and Joe Louis Arena (home of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings).

Detroit and the surrounding region constitute a major manufacturing center, most notably as home to the Big Three automobile companies, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. The city is an important center for global trade with large international law firms having their offices in both Detroit and Windsor.

Most the history is boring religious and founder 'sir, saint' stuff, so i'll skip to the juicy bits.

  • We are a Celtic land.
  • We had a legendary beast that stalked the countryside.
  • We have a lunatic asylum.
  • We have a place that inspired an Alfred Hitchcock movie.
  • We have the most popular surf resort in the UK.
  • There is a Pagan beast that slumbers beneath a colossal rock upon a sacred farm ground. If the land was to be spoiled, the beast shall be disturbed, from which it shall rise and feast upon all living things, defiling the places you hold dear, rampaging across the towns, a cascade upon civilization, smashing stone, uprooting tree, tearing child limb from limb. None shall be spared from the baby-eater, save only those who suffer the blood cycle.

Portland, Oregon got it's name because of the flip of a coin. Two men travelled west, one from Boston, Massachusettes, the other from Portland, Maine. They argued about what to call it, so they flipped a coin and the man from Portland won.

Portland's Willamette River flows and separates the East side from the West side of Portland. It is deep enough to have both full navy battleships and submarines sail down it. It also has nine bridges spanning it, one of the most (if not THE most) bridges in one city, here's a pic of the Willamette with the Steel Bridge (the upper half carries the cars while the lower half carries trains, the lower half also raises to let big ships pass):

Here is Portland at night with another one of the bridges:

Portland is approximately 50-55 miles away from Mt. Hood. Mt. Hood has the only ski slope in the continental USA (if not the whole USA) that has a ski slope open all year long, here's a pic of Portland with Mt. Hood in the background:

Portland also has the oldest, continuously publicly operating rose test garden in the United States. There are over 7,000 rose bushes there with 555 varieties. Today, Portland is the only North American city that can issue its awards to roses of merit throughout the world. Here is a pic of just some of the garden:

Situated on a hill (277 m), commanding a strategic position over the vast plains of the Baixo Alentejo, Beja was already an important place in the antiquity. Already inhabited in Celtic times, the town was later named Pax Julia by Julius Caesar in 48 BCE, when he made peace with the Lusitanians. He raised the town to capital of the southernmost province of Lusitania Santarém and Braga were the other capitals of the conventi). During the reign of emperor Augustus the thriving town became "Pax Augusta". It was already then a strategic road junction.

When the Visigoths took over the region, the town, then called Paca, became the seat of a bishopry. Saint Aprígio (died in 530) became the first Visigothic bishop of Paca. The town fell to the invading Omayyad army in 713.

Starting in 910 there were successive attempts of conquest and reconquest by the Christian kings. With the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba in 1031, Beja became a taifa, an independent Muslim-ruled principality. In 1144 the governor of Beja (Arabic: باجة ا4;زيت), Sidray ibn Wazir, helped the rebellion of the Muridun (disciples) led by Abul-Qasim Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Quasi in the Algarve against power of Seville. In 1150 the town was captured by an army of the Almohads, who annexed it to their North-African empire. It was retaken in 1162 by Fernão Gonçalves, leading the army of the Portuguese king Afonso I. In 1175 Beja was recaptured again by the Almohads. It stayed under Muslim rule till 1234 when king Sancho II finally recaptured the town from the Moors.

All these wars depopulated the town and gradually reduced it into rubble. Only with D. Manuel I in 1521 Beja reached again the status of city. It was attacked and occupied by the Portuguese and the Spanish armies during the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1667).

Beja became again the head of a bishopry in 1770, more than a thousand years after the fall of the Visigothic city. In 1808 Napoleonic troops under General Junot sacked the city and massacred the inhabitants.

Then the some hippies came

New Orleans, Louisiana

I actually live in unincorporated metairie, but they don't have pics of that, and since metiairie (and kenner) are part of The New Orleans Meltropolitan Area, I figured I'd just post some NOLA pics.

Started out as a lumber town in Oregon, and grew. That's about it.

LJUBLJANA - One of the most beautiful cities in Europe

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia and its largest city. It is located in the centre of the country and is a mid-sized city of some 270,000 inhabitants. Ljubljana is regarded as the cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre of Slovenia, independent since 1991. Throughout its history, it has been influenced by its geographic position at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin and Slavic culture.

According to the celebrated Greek legend, the hero Jason and his Argonauts, after finding the Golden Fleece in Colchis, ended up going northwards by sailing on the Danube rather than returning towards the Aegean Sea. Going up, it is said they went towards its tributary the Sava and then to the source of the river Ljubljanica. They disembarked in order to carry their boat to the Adriatic Sea, located to the west, in order to return home. Between the present-day cities of Vrhnika and Ljubljana, the Argonauts found a large lake surrounded by a marsh. It is there that Jason struck down a monster. This monster was the dragon that today is present on the city's coat of arms and flag.

Windsor. Oldest continually inhabited settlement in Canada west of Montreal, founded in 1749. We played a bit of a role in the War of 1812, housing US General William Henry Harrison's headquarters for a period of time. The Weather Network declared us the "smog capital of Canada."

Fargo, ND:

Founded in 1871
Became the "divorce capital" of the Midwest in the 1880s due to lenient divorce laws
Major fire in 1893
Violent tornado in 1957
Big flood in 1997
Biggest flood in Fargo's recorded history in 2009

As you can see, it's a very fascinating area... ;)
