Not really sure what specific order they would be in, but def favs.
The Exorcist
Alien
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The Birds
Psycho (1960)
.....so all my favorites are from the 60's and 70's and that's not even including Carnival of Souls, Night of the Living Dead, The Wicker Man (1973), Rosemarys Baby and The Omen.
Of the newer horror movies, I do like "It Follows" and "The Witch".
Silence of the Lambs
Shit, totally forgot about that.
Although it's kinda just the night-vision part that found creepy. When he almost touches her hair, such an awesome scene.
Alien, Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch, Open Water, Howling.
As for those middle three (which I know people are going to scoff at and question my taste on)....I like psychological horror; how good the movie is surrounding it is really a moot point, and all three of those despite their flaws hits a very primal and relatable notes of horror I find truly frightening.
Howling pretty much solely for Eddie's transformation. Amazing stuff.
@Storm_Marine:
Aren't they one and the same?......I really liked that movie, it was quite different. In fact, each of the movies on my list are quite different.
So yes, this is the movie from a couple years ago that starred the actress that was recently in the psychological thriller "Split"
Off the top of my head:
1> Jacob's Ladder (even if some will argue that this is not horror)
2> Phantasm
3> A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors
4> The House of the Devil
5> Suspiria
Hard to list just five.
Carnival of Souls is excellent
Evil Dead is a wonderful dark comedy too
The Witch, actually kind of terrified for me a while
I respect The Exorcist so I'll give that a spot
and uh... maybe Psycho or Jaws?
Some honorable mentions would be The Shining, Night of the Living Dead, Alien, etc.
Paranormal activity 2
Sinister
Insidious
The conjuring 2
Mama
All films I've seen at cinema, which makes the difference
I accept several older movies are probabily better than what I listed, however I don't get immersed into horror films at home on smaller TV with out surround sound etc.
Cinema is were I get into horror films.
Here is a link to my top ten horror movies ever, as well as some overrated ones (several of which have shown up in this thread).
For the lazy, here are the top five form that list:
5. Evil Dead (the original)
4. The Thing (1982 version of course)
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 version, of course)
2. You're Next
1. It Follows
I will never understand the love that movies like the Shining and The Conjuring get. At least others, like the Exorcist, I understand, but those are two I will never get. The Conjuring was a by the numbers haunted house movie with nothing new in it. It also relied way too much on jump scares. The Shining is a pretentious attempt at being artsy and deep and to be honest is more dull than scary. Both are well made films but that's about the extent of the positive things I can say about them.
