Once or twice a year my school has a thing where all the religious people in the shcool go out and pray around the flag pole. Being a non-religious person, it kind of makes me feel awkward. I mean i attend a public school, i thought religion was supposed to be kept seperate.

My question is...

"What do you gamespot users think of this?"

If you don't want to do it, don't. No one can force you. Let them know as well, as I'm sure you aren't the only one.

I don't really see a problem with it as long as it doesn't infringe on the relgious rights of any student not wanting to take part in the ceremony.

praying at the pole isn't a school sponsored event. It's an event that just kind of swept across the christian nation. If people want to assemble on public grounds and utilize free speech, then i'm all for it

I never said they make people go. The topic is more about the location. Cant they you know pray some where else? like in church. Why the front of the school.

It's just praying. The Christians have their own school, that doesn't mean it's the only place where they can express their faith. We have enough separation as it is.

Were I live all the students and teachers pray in the yard before class when the bell rings. Atheists or people of other religious backrounds just stand there and dont pray. No one has ever complained though, the vast majority is orthodox christian so if they want to pray, so be it, we can respect that as long as they don't expect us to pray or anything.

Really? I don't see how you think this infringes on the freedom of religion. If anything it enhances that right. I'd much rather people know that there are options than to think we have to be secularized atheists.

i thought religion was supposed to be kept seperate.

Ultima_5

Not according to this: Matthew 29:19-20 says, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

My school actually had a celebration of sorts at the flagpole the night before with people playing guitars and worshiping God. I'm in a Christian college btw.

If that happened at my school I would get very angry. I would have no where left to go, school and home are one of my few remaining refuges from religion. Some people dont understand how it is to not be christian in America, and to be forced to endure, day in and day out, a philosophy that damnes me to eternal hellfire, all because a god did not reveal himself to me.

well, I have a problem with assemblies like prayer at the pole, from a spiritual point of view. I don't feel like quoting the actual scripture, but it says in the bible that you're supposed to pray like you're in the closet away from the world. It's not supposed to be used as a public display, or to be used to represent anything. It's meant as a medidation to become closer to god. That's why I never engaged in pray at the pole at my school. I still don't engage in very many public prayer, unless it's at a funeral or something like that

I see your point but I dissagree with you. You have to look at the context of the passage. Jesus was speaking to Phrasees who were not showing off God but showing off their own supposed righteousness. The purpose of praying at the pole is to pray for the school and to show Christian influence within that school. It is to glorify God, not themselves.

Also, do not forget times in the Bible when people teach, preach, and pray publically.

From your post I gather that it's not mandatory to pray at the pole, and no one's forcing you to, so there's nothing wrong there. If religious people want to pray wherever, and they're not forcing anyone to join them, then let them have their spiritual time or whatever it is.

Its not violating the law because it happens before the school day starts, and it isnt sponsored by the school or teachers. Its just something the students choose to do, and they have every right to do it.

Having an open mass at the flag pole, with chanting and all that stuff, would indeed anger me, but there's nothing wrong with some people gathering to pray silently on one location without disrupting everyone else's routine.

There is nothing in the law that says that religion should stay out of public places. The sepration of church and state thing was to keep the goverment from creating an official religion. I can understand that it makes you feel aquard, but this is no reason to say that people should do what they believe.

According to the offical site for it, "See You at the Poleis all about prayer. It's about you coming together and laying aside all the labels and groups for one day, to simply connect with God in prayer and connect with fellow Christians in unity around the flag pole—whether jocks, preps, geeks, Methodists, Baptists, Catholics, sophomores, or seniors."

So long as it is student led, yes.

A teacher is never allowed to innitiate a religious activity but a student is. I do not know all of the official rules for it all but I do know for a fact that is true. ...at least in my state.

Why, because I have a problem with violations of United States law?

Its not violating the law because it happens before the school day starts, and it isnt sponsored by the school or teachers. Its just something the students choose to do, and they have every right to do it.

Well that's fine then. I thought he meant that it was part of the school's prescribed activities, which is illegal. If it's just the students coming together, then pray on. :P

What law says that it is illegal?

So long as it is student led, yes.

A teacher is never allowed to innitiate a religious activity but a student is. I do not know all of the official rules for it all but I do know for a fact that is true. ...at least in my state.

Thank you, I was going to say this. :)
