n an interview with The Atlantic, President Obama was asked a very telling question: Kanye West or Jay-Z?

"The president smiles. 'Jay-Z,' he says, as if the answer should be obvious... 'Although I like Kanye,' Obama continues, with an easy smile. 'He's a Chicago guy. Smart. He's very talented.'"

The interviewer then asked, "Even though you called him a jackass?"

"'Heisa jackass,' Obama says, in his likable and perfectly balanced modern-professorial voice. 'But he's talented.'"

Kanye is talented, but his personality bugs me.

Jay-Z is alot stronger in that area.

Jay Z hasn't made any good songs or lyrics in centuries. At least Kanye is still a valid rapper and excellent producer.

This is one issue that really bothers me about Obama. He's too focused on pop cultures and sports and trying to come off as cool. I know the president is entitled to a life but I'm tired of hearing about his basketball brackets, or his favorite sports players or which freakin' rapper he thinks is better.

This is a very valid point. I disagree with your POV but I can see where you're coming from. I think it is a good thing the president at least attempts to relate to middle america in these ways.

With Bush, I never felt that. I just felt he only tried to relate to his main constituency...the "haves".

He is "cool"... He was popular at his school from reports and he is a very charismatic person not to mention is tall and well groomed (so yeah he is cool). You kind of have to be somewhat cool or a really hard worker to succeed in politics, entertainment, etc. People care maybe because they envy the President and want to be like him so they get upset if he does not like what they like... Because all opinions must conform.

This it is also an attempt to get President Obama to be relatable to the common man which Romney struggles with doing. Republicans are just as guilty of using culture (Romney tried using Nascar and sort of failed) to relate to people and win the voters favor.

He is meaning to say make the President seem relateable to the average man I think. I think he recognises all like sports and music but through President Obama discussing sports and the likes he is placed in a more grounded down to Earth position (given that "who would you rather have a beer with" quality basically) if I caught his point correctly.

eh he wasn't the first though. Alot of presidents between the 40's to the 60's were known for being caught up in pop culture trends.

But the whole "Black man likes rap" stereotype is a little...disappointing, especially coming from a man who is supposed to represent all of America.

It would have been interesting if the music question consisted of a more neutral genre of music...one that doesn't have such obvious African-American implications.

When someone makes themself look like a mean person on a consistent basis. Isn't it fair to assume they're mean on a regular basis? The same can be said for how well Kayne is at making music, consistently bad until someone comes to him with their tune and lyrics.

Oh yeah, really trying to relate to the haves right here.

I don't want to get into a debate over who George Bush consoled in times of need; or haves and have nots. I will only say that there were many disasters during his term and he did not publicly show the same affection to all American citizens that were struck with disaster.
