I was talking with my cousins about school, and college, along those lines until my spoiled cousin joins the conversation. Let's call her "Debbie." She is one of those kids that aren't legitimately wealthy, they just have parents that live beyond their means, she has no class or character. She was complaining how her life in "private" school was so much harder than I can even imagine. I go to a public high school, and don't really care besides the fact that I have to self-educate myself instead of relying on the teachers. My question is, is private school even any better? Or more difficult? I still believe that a good, high-quality self-education can beat anything that I've seen in my school recently, but what do you think?

I went to both. I got a better education in the private school...and was ahead of classmates that had only gone to public. Make of that what you wish.

I went to a public school aswell. Personally I think that self education is also the best way to go if you have bad teachers l did. I stayed at home for a lot of my last year in school and got the best results in the school :)

I gone to private school since the 2nd grade. I like it, the classes are smaller so the teachers can give you more attention and help, but you pay for it with the tuition

Ultimately the only difference is your cousin's family spent a ton of money to get an education for their child and your parents didn't. It's all about applying yourself and high school is irrelevant since the dramatic increase in starting salary doesn't ahppen until you get a college degree and you can get into college just as easily as she can with a public education.

Private schools that are worth their salt are usually leagues ahead of public schools. Because they usually have high tuition rates, they're usually much nicer aesthetically, and can afford to get better teachers, have nicer facilities, etc. Furthermore, smaller class sizes entail a greater degree of interaction between students and the teacher. Lastly, those that go to private schools are generally far less likely to slack off, not do hw, etc, than those that go to public schools.

I'd say public if you want to interact with people from all parts of society.

I went to private school (christian) in grades 2,3,6,7,8.... I went to public school in grades K,1,4,5,9,10

In public schools the teachers don't give a **** about how much you learn or don't learn. I like it that way a lot more. You only have to really learn what you choose. In private schools they act like everyone there is high class people that can handle anything they throw at them, So they expect a whole lot more out of you and there is even peer pressure to do well in school (those freakin retarded students there). I'd say private school was way harder, but only if you don't listen like me. I could have easily gotten A's but I didn't really care. Public school is equiped to handle kids that don't care (it is easier for them).

Would it be beneficial for me to have attended a private school? It is probably too late since, I'm a senior in high school... but I am looking to get an M.D.

It might've helped, but its not like you won't be able to become one just because you went to a public school... It all comes down to how hard you work in college...

There are both good and bad things about both systems, however, looking at ACT and SAT scores private school students do better on them. I personally go to a public school, and it is very easy. The majority of knowledge i have acquired in my life i have had to come across myself.

I'm an Army brat and my family moved around a lot. I've been to many public schools and a few private schools in my time.

Every school is different, but if I had to pick out one major difference between my experiences in public and private schools it would be this...

In public school I was expected to be average. If I excelled, great. If I fell behind, my parents got a note and all other things remained equal. In private school I was expected to excel. I was expected to write like a pro and pull complex calculations out of my ass at a moment's notice. My teachers knew I could do it and they demanded it. If I didn't perform to expectations they'd practically form a committee to find out why! ALL of my teachers were involved, the counselors were involved, the principal was involved, the headmaster was involved, and they made sure parents were involved whether they liked it or not. The wealth of available supports ensured that no student was going to slip through the cracks, and that most of us were going to be pushed to our limits so that we could break them time and again.

That's not to say that everyone needs that level of support or that everyone needs to be challenged to that degree in order to excel, but it sure helps. Oh and again, these are just my school experiences which amount to nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, private schools are far better. They are generally harder academically, but she's probably just a whining.

Well, I've been to both, and they have all got pros and cons. The class sizes in the private school are usually smaller, and of course, you generally learn more. However, the public school in which I now go to, is much better. I'm actually learning more, and there's more people to socialize with. I'm very glad I left it.

i went to private school first...teachers were half retarded and didnt know anything but it was extremely easy. u had to do no work and i kept a steady 4.0. just transfered to a public school and its much harder and the teachers are actually smart. i already know all the kids that go there so it wasnt really a big deal for me to transfer.

Private school was better than public. Public was a waste of time. I could sleep through it and get great grades.

Yes to both. I get a much better education than my cousins. We take different exams and supposedly (newspapers say it) they are more respected by universities than the ones my cousins take so. I learn three languages (French, German, Latin), Maths, History, English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, get to choose from a variety of sports and take part in my schools combined cadet force as part of the airforce. I was learning French two years before my cousins started. Classes are far smaller in private schools too.

I went to public schools.
Unfortunately I got kicked out of my last public high school because I got arrested.

Now I'm in Adult Ed which is basically for highschool drop outs (of any age) or new immigrants to come and get their highschool diploma or whatever course they need to get a job.
In Adult Ed its all about showing up, mainly because we do what highschools do between August-May/June in about 4 months. Which is great if you can keep up, but as long as you show up at least 95% in those 4 months you will most certainly pass.

Around here (NYC) the private schools are for the more wealthy prep families, and the public high schools seem to me more liek a zoo. I go to a "specialized high school" which is supposed to be for more advanced students I suppose, which is in essence of my private and public school examples, though the schools are officially public.

I like public school better.

Public schools, less rules generally, and it's not like school is for learning anyways. One-two hours of self-study at home can cover a weeks worth of school learning.

The teachers are much more educated since it is a private school. The only problem I have with them, and the reason why I do not go to private school is that most of them are based off of regligion.

The only private school close to where I live is a Catholic school.

I've been to both. Public > Private. You can get the same education as a private school by going to public and actually studying. When I went to private school none of the teachers cared...

That's actually false. Private schools pay less and it is much easier to get jobs there. At public schools they keep you for a year and then see if anyone better is available

I guess if you like peace and quiet...private is the way to go. But if you like society and lots of people...then it's public. There is always Catholic...Private Catholic....they are incredibly easy.
