Before I start, I should like to mention that I'm not in support of imperialism or policies of aggression. However, as of late, I've been pondering over the philosophies of the empires of the past, most notably the Roman and British Empires. "Make the world England", that was the British motto up until the end of WW1, "nullus terram", being it's policy of "let there be no land unclaimed or uncultivated." I must admit that I find great comfort from the idea of inhabiting a country that is strongest and that controls vast swathes of territory across the world, thus lessening the amount of established countries coming to power and becoming a danger or even a competitive player in the world at large. This last bit is important, for I think this is where imperialism might be a desirable policy, although it greatly conflicts with my philosophies of isolationism and non-aggression. There should be no doubt that competitive countries demand more from the rest of the world as their power increases, thus weakening other countries in the process or stultifying their power.

My question is simply this: what are your thoughts on pro-imperialism, and provide pros and cons for this policy.

Pro: It brings in resources. Cons: It exploits cultures.

Why am I not surprised that a topic which requires thought has only two posts in it, while all the retarded topics on the front page have about 200 posts? Gamespot FTW!

No empire has had permanent success. The idea that a greater power wouldn't come along is ridiculous - as proven by history.

I feel that imperialism is a non issue to 99% of people. Most people just want to live and eat ice cream. The other 1% that runs the world would likely feel some form of addiction to power and a desire for attention, like all humans do on a basic level. So, when the resources are there, which is rare especially in this day and age where powers are being pulled in so many different directions, a group may try to take control. There are definite pros and cons. The pros in my mind would be a (more) organized system, the con being the obvious issue of all power in one place. All other pros and cons stem from these.

Just to be clear here..and to make sure i'm understanding this correctly..

Imperialism is basically when one conquers other often times weaker cultures/countries and make said conquered country/culture a part of the victor's country?

Yes, I believe that to be the case.

Also, the USA's chance is just about up. It would have been USA+Israel. But I think we are on the verge of a great power struggle (like ww3) where China, Russia, and Iran may try to gain main control of the world economy (The Sino countries as opposed to the UN). I haven't researched this enough though, and I don't believe anyone on here would know more or less than anyone else unless they are involved in the eschelons above the control of the media, because as of now we are all brainwashed to some degree.

Depends on the Empire is in question and how they fit with my beliefs. If the Empire's policies are too socially conservative, then I'd be against it - mostly because the larger a power is, the harder it is to chance it both internally and externally.

What amazes me about the British Empire was just how small Britain was. In 1850, right before the British Raj, England (Anglo Saxons) had 17 million people only, and only about a thousand years of history. On the other hand, India had THOUSANDS (3,000+) years of history and about 300 million people, yet Britain still conquered them.

The British Empire was amazing, but that little island was just too small to hold on for it long. 2 World Wars and it was over. Now Britain is being colonized.

I am against imperialism though, simply because as I said Empires are doomed to eventually die.
