Probably a Red Button

Mean people capture you and tie you to a chair. You have no possiblity of escape. You have two windows through which you can see. In one window are five people standing around in a small room. The other window shows ten people lined up against a wall in a larger area, held at gunpoint by soldiers. You recognize none of the people. In front of you is a large button, which is probably red.

The mean people tell you that if you press the button, gas will fill the small room and kill the five people, but the ten people in the larger room will be set free. However, they tell you that if you do nothing, everyone will die. They inform you that neither possibility has any bearing on your own eventual fate. You have five seconds to decide.

Do you press the button, and kill innocent people by your own hand while saving others, or do you do nothing and watch everyone die?

I'd rather have 5 people die than 15, so press the button.

Edit: Oh what the heck! I just re-read the thraed. Pressing it or not doesn't alter my fate.

I do nothing. While I always have strong urges to push buttons, especially red ones. I am defiant by nature.

Doing nothing is not an act of aggression. Pressing the red button is. I view this in the same light as abortion when the mother's life is at risk. You can save the mother by having an abortion, but it still wouldn't change the fact that you're performing an act of aggression against a nonaggressive fetus. In both cases, I would not act as an aggressor. If the people die, it's not my fault, but the mean people's fault anyway.Genetic_Code

Not hitting the button would be just the same as sending the people to their maker, so I'd prefer to have the blood of only 5 people on my hands. Either way, sounds like I'm stuck, so I might just hit the button out of sheer boredom :P

I would press the button. I wouldn't look at it as me killing 5 people. The psychos that did this killed 5 people. I saved 10.
