what are your thoughts on this style of metal? I think it has some of the best metal around, bands like Dream Theater and porcupine tree are my current favorites.

I'm fine with it, though I cant stand it too long. Dont get me wrong, but the extremely large guitat solos end up boring me.

with some bands, that can be an issue. I find that Dream Theater has that problem. don't get me wrong, the guitarist is great, the songs just feel extremely formulaic.

Progressive metal is by far my favorite genre.

Prog Metal is cool. DT are excellent. Don't like Tool or PT though.

I have no idea. Itseems like there's a new metal genre every 5 minutes, its like E. Coli. But going by the guy who mentioned APC I'd say its allright.

there's so many genres of metal, many bands fill different roles. I say that Opeth is a progressive band, but many say that just because there are harsh vocals, that makes them death metal :|

Tech death is the closest thing to prog metal that doesn't make me want to shoot my genitals off. I like most of the stuff that influenced prog metal and avant-garde metal bands though.

I consider Opeth as a Progressive Death Metal Band. They have elements of both genres.
