This guy can play dragonforce solos better than dragonforce can on a bass

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSFKCBTtvVU&feature=channel

I think it's time to stop the false mindset everyone has that bass is just a lesser form of guitar

Edit: the second link is master of puppets with both guitar solos on bass

Well I never thought one over the other since I am familiar with both. If the band or the artist chooses to make a complex solo for said instrument, more power to them.

I don't know anyone who thinks that. Maybe that mindset comes from crappy bass players that only play the root note of the chord the guitar player is playing.

That video is pretty much unwatchable. Look at all the brown colors and stuff dude. You gotta scope aesthetics and stuff you know?

dude dragonforce.. lol ok..

u want fast bass lines that are good? try YYZ and caught somewhre in time.

also only ignorant ppl would argue that bass cant be as fast as guitar.. geddy lee and steve harris amoung others rip even faster than their guitar playing counterparts most of the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrkFVsyGcRc

i love this vid because harris plays the bass like his life depends on it. listen to the studio version, this song was made over harris' bassline.. and its just intense.

I was already a fan of his stuff. This GBagley or whatever is a beast on bass. He played the full song of Orion, bass and guitar solos. Here, watch this.

Bass shredding is rare, but there are those who can.

Yes there are fast Bass players out there, and I don't know anyone that thinks bass is a lesser form of guitar. It just serves a different purpose. And just because someone is fast doesn't mean they're automatically good. If they can't keep rhythm the bass player is essentially worthless.

Don't get me wrong, I hate dragonforce with a passion. It's just that video shows off Gbagley's bass skills. I just brought this up because whenever I tell someone at my school or wherever that i play bass, I always get a weird look for some reason. There has also been a time a month or so ago where some ignorant guitarist in one of my classes got in a full fledged argument with me saying bass takes no skill and stuff. It also just seems like the general audience today always overlooks bass and only sees the guitarist as the only one with any musical skill.

The people you talk music with are idiots. Bass is such an important instrument. Show them Les Claypool, Flea, Victor Wooten, and Jaco Pastorius. That should shut them up.

That's because, in many POPULAR bands, the guitarist IS the only one with skill. The guitar is shredding up a storm and the bass player is playing the root notes to the chord changes in the song. It's sad, I know :(

i wish their were more bass players that played their own licks and didnt follow the rhythem guitar soo much.. cliff burton was great but lets be honest, i remember listening to hit the lights once listening for distinc bass and i could only hear it like 2x each for like half a second where cliff would play a divebombish sound after the main riff ended going into the chorus ( i think this was where it is) and aside from for whom thebell tolls and orion theirs no good bass in metallica.. im not bashing cliff at all, i said he's great, but u cant rly distinguise the bass much.. and in AJFA with jason.. lol forget it. listen to mercyful fate cover song off the garage inc album.. theirs a part where the song where the guitar stops and the bass and drums play ... soo quiet.. then compare it to the orig. fate songs.. this isnt just with metallica but with many bands... megadeth and slayer as well ( i dont recall any distinct basslines in any slayer song , at least none come to mind) .. and past lucriecia and the peace sells line .. not much from megadeth the only bands i hear good distinct bass and bass that dosnt ride the guitar's you know what are rush, pink floyd ( waters is underrated, while he's not that great he made some great lines ) , dream theater and iron maiden, i guess i could add primus cuz of les claypool but i dont listen to them so i dont know for sure.

they probably think like that because of the way most bassists in mainstream bands play. a good example would be pete wentz, who demonstrates no skill or talent at all yet acts like fall out boy would just cease to exist if he left.

well xeros , lets be honest , their is no good current band... IMO flee is way too good for the chilli peppers, he shouldve joined megadeth when mustaine was recruting or something, or even metallica. but other than that .. i mean fallout boy and all these other poser saturday night live bands... bla bla mainstream.. i mean i watch them on tv ( SNL exc.. ) and theyre jst strumming powerchords while their emo / cute ( w/e ) lead singer jst sings his song.. i really think that in mainstream music .. the MUSIC is a background to vocals.. just like in some kind of monster how the band told kirk that solo's are outdated.. it seems MUSIC in a song has become outdated, and nothing but a looping powerchord in the background to a song with a catchy hook thatll get on the charts for 3 weeks is needed anymore and this makes me sick

maybee i am interpol, because i admittedly am not a fan of their music, IMO ( i stress IMO because i dont want to pull a vilot hero by forcing my opinions) i think their very overrated, altho they do have a few good songs and i can see their apeal.. but its definate and obvious that flee is the driving force of the band, and he is extremely technically skilled..

My problem with Cliff was that he tried to make his bass sound too much like a guitar.

They're all pretty important. When Frusciante left for awhile, RHCP barely functioned, and put out One Hot Minute which was very weak.

*scratches head* even though the bass guitar and guitar are of similar shape, they are quite different instruments with their own roles in music. I dunno why people can't see this.

To the people who can't seem to find a band with a distinct bass; stop looking for it in the wrong places. Metal just doesn't really have them..

Only musically ignorant people will downplay the awesomness of the bass.

Whenever people bring up bass I just gotta bring up these songs:

Muse-Hysteria

Muse-Hyper Music (Whats that? Oh yeah. thats the BASS creating the rythym!)

Maximum the Hormone-Black Power G Men Spy (Such a sick bass-line!)

Maximum the Hormone-Rockimpo Goroshi

Maximum the Hormone-Bikini Sports Ponchin

Black Sabbath-War Pigs (The bassline in the song is so underrated!)

Hell even Limp Bizkit had some good bass!

Yes, yes. We all know bass is as good as guitar. People put such heavy love on Metallica guitar, or whatever, but truly, guitar would only be half as good without bass... some bands, not even that. Bass solos are awesome, especially Bass-ically by Black Sabbath. EDIT: Check this stuff. The Cellonator playing Surfing with the Alien by King Satch. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=FlGBMAgDGUU

You don't have to look far for some proof. Bass just has a different style, but that's not saying it's not fit for playing fast.

Where is the proof that the bass can be used to produce a bassline which is a basis to a song and very important element of the overall sound.

Who cares if someone can play it really fast. The bass preforms a far more important job.

I saw Steve Vai a couple years ago and his bass player, Billy Sheehan, was unreal. His bass had LED's in the frets and he was tapping with two hands and keeping up with Vai note for note
