It's too bad the Star Wars universe didn't have psychologists because if they did, Anakin would not have turned to the dark side and the universe would not have been in peril. It turns out, all he would have needed was a little psychotherapy and he would have been fine.

I hope we all learned a lesson from from this.

"Using the dark side of the Force could be considered as similar to drug use: It feels really good when you use it, it alters your consciousness and you know you shouldn't do it." Wow, I never realised drugs were as cool as the dark side! :o

I have learned that drugs give people the ability to force choke and shoot electricity out of their hands!

It's his fault that he went over to the dark side.

It's like how you have a choice to use drugs.

But isn't it true he spoke with Yoda briefly in episode 3? They didn't talk as much as they should have, if they did IMO that would have helped.

yea but noone does drugs (or turns to the dark side i guess) for the sake of doing the wrong thing. It fulfills a different purpose (like easing emotional pain) in ones life and the unintended side effect is a ruined life. It is not fair to cast everyone in the same light light as having equal "choices", because everyone brings a lifetime of experience (and bias) to that choice. Just because you have never been driven to the point of turning to drugs does not mean that you would or could not be driven to that point given a set of circumstances that shape your thought processes.

I think one question people should ask:

If Anakin hadn't turned to the dark side, would he have brought balance to the force? The balance seen when he "dethroned" the Emperor in Return of the Jedi.

Edit: Honestly, he started to turn when he let the anger over the death of his mother take control and committed murder. He let it keep going and murdered some more. The act of bringing balance was also a murder. Anakin was a serial killer, but he "wasn't a bad person".

Yoda may have been a master of the force, but he's not a liscensed psychologist.

At the same time he seemed to know what dangerous things Anakin was getting into, foreseeing the future. He told him to be careful about that. Yet at the same time Yoda told Anakin to not mourn or miss those who died...And I think letting Padme die was the last thing that Anakin wanted.

This wasn't a study and it's real purpose is just to raise public awareness about BPD as well as possibly get some people interested in psychology and psychiatry. It didn't cost anyone anything as this would have been done on the researchers' own time and would have taken something like 9 hours total to come up with (the time it takes to watch all six Star Wars movies). It's a public outreach attempt. Even scientists have a sense of humor (like when the CDC decided to go with a "zombie apocalypse" scenario when running a simulation for a generalized plague outbreak).

Yep. Came with an imperial star fleet, and a death star for transportation. (till his stupid kid wrecked it...) Looking at the end of episode 3, I think he had a pretty rad health benefits package too.

You can name anything that turns people from doing something right a disorder, since we all want to do things right. Our intentions are always good. Others can claim they aren't, but they are not You. You can claim Yours aren't, but only with good intent. There's no reason to want to do something that You think is bad in any given situation.
The only things causing people to do bad things are misunderstanding and limitation of time/self control. i.e. it is outside of their power.

Add to this the extremely limited amount of control the conscious has over the subconscious, and You start to see the way things really are.

There are no consciousnesses here that are to blame or are criminal. The people we call criminals or place blame on, include their subconscious decision making. The people You blame for things that You don't like, are 95% passenger/machine.

In the future we might want to find a way to seperate consciousness from subconsciousness to only punish/correct the subconscious mind.
That way we can improve society without anyone consciously being in pain because of a punishment.

It's his fault that he went over to the dark side.

It's like how you have a choice to use drugs.

Plzhelpmelearn

yea but noone does drugs (or turns to the dark side i guess) for the sake of doing the wrong thing.

I can agree with you that some people have a heavier (emotional) burden and are more compelled towards drugs (or the dark side), but what I am saying is everyone has a choice and it is their (or Anakin's)choice tomakewhether or notthey use drugs (or go over to the dark side).

The writers still could have put in attributes (unknowingly) which would lead psychologists and psychiatrists to a conclusion about what he was suffering from.

Yes, but still, there is nothing we can know about the character except what is in the script, because that is literally all the character is. It seems a bit silly to psychoanalyze a script, which is basically what we're doing here.

I agree it is silly but it seems like they have a good enough argument to present it in a paper.

Not entirely true, there is more then just the movie script....there are also the expanded univeres books :3 :P
