Ireland was divided because of religion. I'm not entirely which sects of Chirstianity are divided, but I think one of them is Roman Catholic.THE_DRUGGIE
Divided because the crown wanted to take over Ireland so they sent their people over. Yes the religion was different.
[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Yes we know that....yes we know why.wizard90
What do you mean 'we'? Maybe you do, but you cant speak for your whole country when making a claim like that.
The majority of Americans know and those that don't need a history class.....
was watching a BBC documentary on our (the UK's) Monarchy and it was interviewing some American people about our Queens visit to the US a little while ago and they were saying how they should she ruled the UK and she was still making all the decisions, and other people had never heard of her and others thought that the UK was just england... does this really represent the standard of US foreign knowledge?GenTom
No...it does not. To be fair I could go to the UK and ask US questions and show incorrect answers as well.;)

No...
At partition. The countys that had a protostant majority stayedas part of the UK and the countys with Catholic majoritys split and became the RoI. There was a large amount of terrorist and paramilitary fighting in the 60's,70's and 80's but the terrrorist groups are just organised crime groups nowadays...

I'm talking about the actual start. You do know the UK sent their people over and took the land from the Irish?

That would not be a symptom of schizophrenia.;)
Dissociative Idenity however, since they often say, "We"(When talking about themself), and a lot of people confuse them for some odd reason...We are not amused......:P

you should watch some of the youtube videos they will remind you of al qaida interview videos.
i would also like to point out to the ill informed that there are more dead a a result of NI's troubles than in 9/11.

I know for a fact both the IRA and UDA are very active organisations. with the IRA performing a kneecapping(shooting someone through both knee caps so they can never walk again) on a universaty student near my house because he drove through there community with a northern irelnad football team tax disc holder. The UDA are also very active in seeling stolen goods (there actually selling ps3's stolen from game for £100,and thats not where i got mine before people ask)

And then they wanted to change religion....which you can't force. It's a long history with both sides doing the wrong thing at times. Ireland was initally it's own country....usually a subjegated people are not happy that way. It is time to move past that though....by both parties.
Part of my ancestry on my dad's side was from N. Ireland....but Catholic. :?

you do realise england , scotland and wales are part of the UK but are techincally diffrent countries(scotland has actaully a nationalist goverment at the minute and may vote to remove itself from the united kingdom)
Its similar in the way America owns hawaii

You do realize Scotland and Wales aren't 100% happy either. The US doesn't OWN Hawaii...it's one of the states with the same rights.

much in the way NI is a province of the united kingdom of great britian and northern ireland and can vote to remove itself from that union and has its owns goverment and laws.
That is exactly the same way as hawai is in regards to the united states

It's not the same thing....but I don't think you'd be swayed. And answering your original question...the educated Americans know. What part of NI are you from?
dunmurry
its half way between belfast and lisburn
muff07
I know where Belfast is....can't place the other two though.

That is nothing like the way Hawaii (or New York or Wisconsin or any other state) is in regards to the U.S.
What you describe sounds more like Puerto Rico.

Im sorry but the majority of americans do not know... and that is probably true. 45 out of 70 of my american friends believe the US consists of 52 states, now either i hang out with idiots, or americans are usually not that well educated when it comes to small facts. (thos extra states they name are Puerto rico and guam)bluebusiness
You'd be wrong.....

Agreed, I've never known anyone that's thought that. However, I will tell the truth, I didn't know the answer to the topic, I only knew that Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and the other is well, Ireland.[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="bluebusiness"]Im sorry but the majority of americans do not know... and that is probably true. 45 out of 70 of my american friends believe the US consists of 52 states, now either i hang out with idiots, or americans are usually not that well educated when it comes to small facts. Doubt he has any logistiacal knowledge of Americans. I've never encountered an actual American that didn't know we had 50 states.:|
