Question about buying a car

I want to buy a good used car this is fuel efficient. Right now I have a 1995 Chevy Yukon, and it gets probably about 14 miles per gallon, so I'd like something better than that.

How much should I expect to pay for something that's not as old as what I have now, is in good condition (not high mileage, everything works right, etc.), and fuel efficient?

Maybe you should look into a 2000-05 Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic... one of those with less than, um, say.. 75,000 miles and in proper working condition... will probably run you anywhere from $8,000-16,000.

well, in NYC i always see used cars ( 2002 to 2005 ) run for about 5G's. mainly American cars like Chevy, Pontiac and Dodge. most can get you about 29 to 36 MPG and they all seem to be in great condition.

A 1995-2000 Honda Accord/Prelude or Toyota Camry would be a decent car - I'd hesitate to recommend the Civic or Corolla, though, unless you're okay with having a fairly small car.

You could probably get one of those with maybe 100k on them (or less if you're lucky) for $5000 or so.

Agreed. Those cars should be reliable (get a mechanic to check it first) and very efficient.

When you guys are saying the prices, are you talking about if I bought it from a dealership, or if I was getting something from a listing on craigslist, or what?

I don't know much about cars, but this looks pretty good, and it's only $3300. Of course, I would look into it more and ask questions and stuff, but from what I see, it looks alright.

Either. Prices will vary quite a bit too, since some people try and ask more than it's worth. Dealers do have the advantage of offering trade-ins on your existing vehicle.

For a bit of comparison, my parents picked themselves up a beater car last weekend - 1994 Camry LE, just under 90,000km (so...55,000 miles?) and the woman kept track of every repair and trip to the pump and it set them back $5500. I think it was a bit overpriced, but still not a bad deal. It had all the major stuff replaced recently, too, from the fuel and water pumps to the timing belt. That's part of the problem with some used cars, as many people don't keep track of anything.

i think some of you guys are being over charged, could be because they are foreign cars too.

TC try looking in Kellys Blue Book for the info you need.....and if you know the cars VIN number you should be able to find out about the history of the car you want to purchased too. very useful site.
