as far as i remember, in the first 4 or 5 seasons, he only interfered when the Police had failed to catch the actual suspect for some reason, but he seem to have changed that pattern in the recent seasons,am i right? if so, when did it start off and why is he still acting like he's following the codes his father thought him?

It's an interesting take on essentially the identity struggle we all go through, just the most extreme case, it has to constantly change and become his own, which makes the later seasons keep fresh.

Dexter has concealed his findings from the department early on, so he could have the victim all to himself. Often it was just because of the way he got evidence. In recent seasons he has been going against "the code" far more often. Whether this is because of Rita's death or because he because he believes Harry's code is not always right.

His recent outings have certainly stretched and even broken the code his father made.  He has always made mistakes and sometimes concealed evidence.

the thing i don't understand about the recent seasons is that he's always trying to surpass the police in getting the suspect when it's quite clear they are in the right direction. in the older seasons, he only meddles when the suspect somehow manages to get away with their actions.
