Not trying to start a big religious debate or anything but i was just wondering, do you guys celebrate Christmas? I mean it is Christmas, the day we celebrate the birth of the founder of the Christian religion Christ.

Actually, Jesus was Jewish. So he technically didn't start the Christian religion.

I guess him being Christ had nothing to do with it. As you can tell by the godless Samus Aran in my avatar, I do celebrate Christmas.

Pretty much.

No matter what it was originally, Christmas is now a religious holiday only for people who choose to look at it that way.

I do. Pretty much my entire family is christian anyways, but then again I find it ironic that no one ever seems to mention Jesus at any point of our get together:lol:

Do you think if someone managed to prove that the whole Christian religion is a sham that Christmas as we know it wouldn't go ahead this year, or any year thereafter? No? That's what I thought. Christmas is just a commercial wallowing now. Even for theists you can't exactly say it holds much spiritual value any more.

Christmas has been commercialized so much that it's losing it's religious value.

Just an excuse to get free stuff really.

And I like decorating the tree as a family and all that, but thats really a pagan tradition originally so I am still not doing anything Christian related.

Christianity started out as a strictly Judaic sect, you know...

Christmas is based on pagan celebration, as many of you likely know.

http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/Christmas_TheRealStory.htm

has to be the most ironic Christian holiday ever. i actually know some staunch Christians that refuse to celebrate Christmas due to it's pagan roots and symbology (xmas trees, wreaths, etc.).

What? Jesus was Jewish. harashawn

He was also convicted of blasphemy against Judaism due to his radical new teachings that eventually developed a large following of people who continued to spread His teachings.

Hence, a new religion.

He didn't start the religion, he is the religion. The first Christians started it, and Jesus was not a Christian.

Christmas was blatantly ripped off from Saturnalia. And commercialism has largely ripped off Christmas anyway, with all the business about Santa and all that. You're just lucky the name hasn't been changed again. :P

Yes, I celebrate Christmas. I don't really care about whether it's religious festival or not, but even if I wanted to avoid it, I would be unable to do so: aside from my elder brother, the entire family is made out of Christians. We're closet atheists.

Yes I celebrate Christmas, kind of a tradition around here. Now it being the celebration of the birth of Christ, that's just something the Pope made up around 300-400 AD.

Christmas has never been about religion, its a winter festival at it's root and got tied up with the birth of Jesus along the way(who wasn't born on the 25th).

Merry Xmas

Christmas is now as much of a secular holiday as it is a religious one. Isn't that obvious by now? See Halloween if you need a transitional example.

That the holiday was never really related to Christianity anyway (the celebration methods came from pagan rituals, too), which means it doesn't make much sense for people to see a problem with atheists celebrating it as well. It's basically a day on which some early Christians just randomly decided "okay we're gonna take a pagan holiday and name it after Jesus".

This is especially true in modern times. How much Christmas displays or decorations do you see that actually have anything at all to do with the birth of Jesus compared to the total number of them? That includes lights, ornaments, Christmas trees, Santa Claus...

I disagree. It's not laughable. Many people including myself still celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. With that said, I don't see anything wrong with any one celebrating Christmas regardless of their beliefs.
