I'm looking for an instrument. Exactly what type is what I need help with. I want something small, so that I can bring it with me and practice whenever I find I have a spare moment. But I want something that sounds beautiful, and familiar to most people. However I also don't want something that needs to have strings replaced or has reeds that break, so that I wouldn't have something happen with it and be unable to play it until I got whatever snapped or broke fixed. BUT ALSO something that isn't extremely childish, something professional seeming. But price doesn't matter to me much, I'm willing to save up. And the difficulty of playing doesn't matter too much either because I want it SO I'll have something to learn, practice, and hopefully get good at.

I'm very picky. :( Sorry.

Get a trumpet. No strings, no reeds and they sound beautiful when played well. And they're small and compact and they're easy to clean/maintain.

Yep. All of the above reasons are true, in addition to the fact that I play/played trumpet for many years means that it's the coolest instrument ever devised.

The saxophone has reeds but it's a very beautiful instrument. And the reeds don't break to often.

Well looks like lots of people say trumpet. =O I'll need to look into that real good - but I also really like the idea of a flute or piccolo.
Thanks! ^^

Actually, maintenance is pretty darn important to any instrument, so looking after a couple of reeds wouldn't be so bad. And then the perfect, smaller instrument for you is the clarinet. But a sax case is virtually the same size as that of a trumpet, and if you want anything smaller than a tuba or trombone, there's trumpet, alto sax, soprano sax, flute, piccolo, clarinet, french horn, oboe, et cetera. Although nobody actually likes the way a piccolo sounds.

But, personally, I believe you should go to a local music store- they'll let you try on a few different instruments, and really, your best bet is going to be the one you're most comfortable playing, not the one that's most convenient to lug around. Only then will playing that instrument be fun.

oh I forgot to mention. With the trumpet. You have to buy valve oil and oil regularly or the keys stick and it doesn't play very well. you might as well look after a couple reeds cause one reed can essitially last you 2 months if you keep it in it's case.

Well I play keyboards, or rather I'm learning, but they're a bit too chunky to bring places with me. Though I have seen roll out keyboards that would do nicely, however I'm not sure how the quality of those would be. :(

All instruments require about the same level of maintenence (except for recorders, harmonicas, and the like). In a violin or viola, it only costs $10 or so to replace the strings with another string of low quality, which is all you need until you get better.

2)Flute
3)Ocarina
4)Recorder

Noo, no way that would work, I've got the worse voice on the planet and attempting to sing with it would get me killed. :P
