Why do so many people who are (or claim to be) part of a religion, be it Christianity or Islam or Judaism or Buddhism or whatever, act in ways that go against their religious beliefs? Do they just not care about their religion (despite claiming to be part of it) or do they not actually believe in it and just call themselves Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Mormon etc. because they were born with it? For instance a vast majority of people I know who claim to be Catholic still have sex before marriage or use drugs or party or do a whole bunch of things that go against their religion, even though (as they know) the Bible outright condemns it....isn't it pointless to claim you're part of the religion or believe in God if you're gonna act against it without hesitation? This type of pick-and-choose approach seems hypocritical to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

That's simple, because religion sets unrealistic standards of behavior, partly because it's still using an archaic system of morality that has changed very little in thousands of years and partly because its doctrine was written by looney acetics who posited just about anything that makes humans feel good as evil, probably because they were self-hating nuts who thought that their vision of perfection gave them leave to pontificate to everyone else.

because religion plays off of emotion and unreasonable standards and a lack of evidence. Nearly everything they are taught can be interpreted in hundreds of ways, from extremism to rather tame beliefs....everyone picks what they like about it and ignores the rest. The result is an uncountable number of different belief systems. Contrary to what some religious folk might say, morals came well before religion, and so they use their moral system to pick and choose what and what not to practice.

Simple answer is this.....religions have a moral code predicated on what is perfection. People should strive for that but being as people are not perfect...they will make a few mistakes along the way.

Can you really blame them for not taking their religion seriously? There is nothing more absurd than some of the most popular religious beliefs.

I hate the way people use the word 'mistake'. Mistakes aren't purposeful.

Since I've been baptised, communed and confirmed I will always be part of the Roman Catholic Church whether I like it or not, but that doesn't mean I actually give 2 sh*ts about whatever they're doing. I know what's right and wrong for me and for society, I don't need a religion dictating to me what I can or can't do.

Jesus is the only person who is capable of living like Jesus. Hypocrisy is a grounds for many to reject God, but because of my own hypocrisy I cannot help but run to God all the more because of the undeserved grace that he has bestowed upon my hypocritical self.

People throw that word about like it's a cheap whore. "Yeah, I cheated on my wife. I made a mistake and I'm sorry." And so on.

there's no need to be self loathing and bringing yourself down only to find a way to bring yourself up again. Start at the top

I do not loath myself, I just do not believe my awesomeness is not quite as good as the awesomeness of Jesus. :P

Some people are hypocrites and are only religious in name only and not in their soul or their actions. You see this with any crowd, but you shouldn't generalise and assume all people of that religion act that way.

Because the vast majority of religions hold moral standards that run entirely contrary to human nature. They are powered by guilt, and feed off of gullibility.

Must just be a phase you are going through. Maybe once you start having sex, you'll start to feel the guilt flow through you. Especially if you marry a good Jewish woman.
