after watching the whole series and loving every bit of it, i have a question about one of the characters. Lt. Ronald Speirs
had the myth about him that he gave cigarettes to enemy POW's before killing them all, and that he shot one of his own soldiers for being drunk, later in the video, he addresses whether or not it was true or not and i was not clear on what he said. Can someone who knows about this film tell me whether or not he actually did kill all those people or if it was just a rumor. That was a great movie, hard to watch, but none the less, and excellent film that i recommend to everyone!

EDIT: Ok, thanks for the replys guys, i got wise and decided to Wikipedia it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Speirs

they say that the shootings happened, but they are not sure if it was him or not. but he shot a man in his comand who failed to obey a direct order on the battlefield.

I highly suggest you read his wikipedia page, He was an amazing figure.

BoB was a fantastic mini series.. i can't wait for the next one they are making which is set in the Pacific.

As for your question, i can't remember off the top of my head.. i don't think he admits to doing anything specifically though. Maybe watch that part again?

The part about giving the POWs cigarettes then shooting them is true ( it was shown in episode 3 i think, you might not have known what it was about and thought it was irrelevant), but theres no clarification on the drunk soldier.

In Major Winters' recent book, he alluded to the fact that Spiers actually did kill the POWS. As far as the drunk soldier, nobody knows.

Wow, awesome. One of the main characters is Eugene B. Sledge, too. I just finished his book, "With the Old Breed." I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the "grunt's eye" view of WWII in the Pacific. Absolutely amazing book.

What did this Robert Leckie guy write? He's credited with the "book" that the new series will be based on, what book is it?

I read his book, "Helmet for my Pillow." It was OK. I'm sure he's written more books, but it's weird that it's not based on Sledge's book considering he's one of the main characters.

Aw man the Pacific can't be as good. Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg directed Band of Brothers. Two other guys are directing The Pacific. Too bad Steven and Tom can't get back together to do it again.

They didn't direct all of them, they produced them. I doubt it will be as good (because how could it be perfect) but, it'll absolutely be worth seeing, multiple times..

defiantly agree with you there. I just finished watching the series and it was really powerful. I highly doubt there has ever been a company in any war that saw more combat than Easy Company. Front lines in every fight, from D-Day Market Garden, the Holocaust, until the Japanese Surrendered.. truly remarkable

Something weird that I thought about the concentration camp scenes...Did anyone else think they were more depressing than Schindler's List? I think it was because it was in color.

Of the 235 man company Sledge was in (presumably the company that "Pacific" is based on) 150 men were killed, wounded, or missing during the campaign on Peleliu alone. He claimed that only 26 veterans that landed during Peleliu were around for the end of the following campaign on Okinawa. "Statistically, the infantry units had suffered over 150% losses through the two campaigns.

If you want to go by numbers, yeah there were alot more squads that suffered greater losses such as the 1st Mainem(civil war) which lost all but two members. But i am basing it off how much action these guys saw, Easy Company might not have been killed the most but they were always on the front line, always on the far side of the line, and the first to go into every battle.

One of the worst parts about the situation that hit me hardest was when the translator had to order the Jews back into the camp so they could moniter their health. Even the translator cried after having to tell them that it was for their own good that they could not eat or drink any more.

Yes he did shoot them, you can see it in one of the earlier episodes, one of the soldiers sits down with one of the POW's and finds out hes actually from the states himself (Oregon i think) but his family originated from Germany so he felt a desire to fight along side his family's country, they found alot in common and figured they could have been really good friends if not for the way, then when the soldier must leave, he starts walking down the pathway and hears gunshots so he turns around to see him shooting all the POW's who are lined up.

They never showed that at that time he was shooting those guys though. I want a real source, since there were some historical inaccuracies all over the place anyway.

Yeah, i got wise and went to Wikipedia. He shot one of his troops through the head because he disobeyed two direct orders while they were under fire, and the shooting of the POWs did occur, but they were directly ordered not to take prisoners (the 108th was ordered that). they were unclear as to who killed them but Ct. Winters claims Speirs shot them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Speirs go the the section "Rumours" on the page and it explains it better then me.
