"*** Girl in Damascus" - Real, or fake?

This has been making rounds on the Internet recently.

The question is, who is the identity of this blogger? Is it really a Syrian lesbian using a pseudonym to protect herself, or is it a Syrian-American or someone with knowledge of the region making such posts?

I am inclined to believe the former - since I doubt anyone would bother summoning a hoax out of something like this. But there are many inconsistencies to her stories.

If she really exists and is under arrest, then good luck to her.

Questions regarding the account of Sandra Bagaria are now even surfacing. The woman who claimed to be Ms Araf's partner has now confirmed that she was a personal friend of Ms Araf, but that the two had never actually met. They had never conversed even via Skype. They conducted an online relationship including some 500 e-mails, but that this had only been going on since January.

The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that the pictures that have been widely circulating as those of Araf are not hers. They appear to photos of Jelena Lecic, a woman who lives in London.

I have no doubt that there are dozens of Gazans just like you who are probably doing the same. Don't worry, your blog will probably receive more attention once Israel launches another offensive...
