i dont have hbo, but im excited to see it once theres a home video release. i liked the preview they released online a while back, but the direction didnt quite live up to martin's writing. the opening prologue with the Others was, in the book, a foreboding chapter that looms over the entire series. in the tv show, it doesnt quite have the same impact and they quickly move on. How do they quickly move on? It plays out a little tamer than the book and there are a few changes but it still has that impact as it did. The first fiteen mintues does not do the first episode justice
there are few things that the book does better in that chapter. in the show, the new ranger and old ranger quickly get killed and will runs off. in the book, the focus is how much of a threat the others are. grr martin makes sure that we "see." another big thing is that in the book the ranger in charge is noble. sure, hes foolhardy and sends his men to their deaths either way, but he doesnt have his men do anything that he wouldnt. he sets himself up for a romanticized showdown with the others only to get toyed with and killed in a hopeless cause. but thats a big part of the series. idealists and honorable men either compromise or die.
again i liked the preview and i would hate to come off as one of those fanboys who despises every little change that occurs in an adaptation because its not exactly what they envisioned. while im certainly a fanboy, i accept that the books and tv series are different things and one has no effect on the greatness of the other. i just genuinely liked how the book handled the prologue more than the tv series.
While I disagree with you on the prologue, there are a few things that I wish they would have kept in. I will admit, I enjoyed the first episode, but having read the series four times, it is hard for me to not nitpick. Now the thing is for me, is that the changes for the TV series were neccessary to some degree because of the POV style the books have, the new scenes and the changing of some scenes were odd, but essentially the same things happened...just a bit differently,
the Feast scene from GoT, in the book you may remember that Jon Snow sits in the back of the feast, gets drunk, has the confrontation with Benjen and goes out side and encounters Tyrion. In the series, Jon does not go to the feast, instead he is outside hitting a practice dummy, stating that Catelyn did not want him at the feast at all and than Benjen comes to him and they have their talk. Than afterwards Tyrion talks to him out side.
it is a little different but still gets the point of that scene across. I think some of the changes were neccessary due to the PoV nature of the show. I will tell you though that the episode was paced brilliantly none the less...
