So the first episode of Game of Thrones just aired, and personally I thought they did a good job in capturing those early chapters of the book. Though there were some changes, and new scenes added they did capture the story of the book perfectly, and the pacing was great, especially with condensing that much story in one episode. Who else watched this?

I thought it was good as well. Not mind blowing, but pretty solid.

This is assuming they follow certain plot points contained within the series. It would be hard to do, considering that it would require the removal of most of their big stars. . . Not that I saw the thing, due to my lack of HBO.:cry::cry:

I think they did a great job especially the opening scene beyond the wall. For anyone new to the series , trust me the first couple of episodes are just going to be developing the characters and the world they live in.

I'm going to guess somewhere around the 4th episode is when all hell is going to break loose. Love the series

IMDB shows Sean Bean(Eddard Stark) only in two episodes. That leads me to believe "Game of Thrones" will encompass all the books, not just Game of Thrones. It's a big mistake, in my eyes, but hey. I haven't gotten to see it yet, so hopefully that will change my mind.

Well IMDB is alot like Wikipedia, you cannot trust it. The first season is just "Game of Thrones", thats it. If there should be a second season it would be based off of Clash of Kings. Sean Bean is not in two episodes, go do actual research at sites that have accurate information on the series, such as Winter is Coming. Also the first episode ends,
With Bran being thrown by Jaimie lannister, now way they get to Neds execution by episode 2
. Each season will be based on a book, season 1 is not following all the books, and that would be impossible considering that the books are not finished yet. The fifth book comes out this summer actually.

So far they are following major plot points. We will have to see what they do. I personally saw some of the subtle nuances in the books missing
Such as in the books execution scene, Theon Greyjoy kicks the victims head, in the series he is very much in the background
i dont have hbo, but im excited to see it once theres a home video release. i liked the preview they released online a while back, but the direction didnt quite live up to martin's writing. the opening prologue with the Others was, in the book, a foreboding chapter that looms over the entire series. in the tv show, it doesnt quite have the same impact and they quickly move on.

How do they quickly move on? It plays out a little tamer than the book and there are a few changes but it still has that impact as it did. The first fiteen mintues does not do the first episode justice

Never read the book(s), so it's all new to me.

It was a decent first episode that showed potential for the series.

Will catch it again next week.

there are few things that the book does better in that chapter. in the show, the new ranger and old ranger quickly get killed and will runs off. in the book, the focus is how much of a threat the others are. grr martin makes sure that we "see." another big thing is that in the book the ranger in charge is noble. sure, hes foolhardy and sends his men to their deaths either way, but he doesnt have his men do anything that he wouldnt. he sets himself up for a romanticized showdown with the others only to get toyed with and killed in a hopeless cause. but thats a big part of the series. idealists and honorable men either compromise or die.

again i liked the preview and i would hate to come off as one of those fanboys who despises every little change that occurs in an adaptation because its not exactly what they envisioned. while im certainly a fanboy, i accept that the books and tv series are different things and one has no effect on the greatness of the other. i just genuinely liked how the book handled the prologue more than the tv series.

Whew, I was afraid we didn't have one of these threads yet! Thanks for saving my opinion of OT's taste in TV shows. :P Anyway, I got to see the first episode thanks to a free trial period of HBO. I love the books, and the pilot yesterday showed a lot of promise. The only difficulty might be balancing the viewpoints of so many characters. I'm not sure the makers can fit enough material in each episode to the first book justice. Either way, I won't be watching along--alas. I'll have to wait for the DVDs, which presumably won't be out until next year or so.

I've been waiting for this for awhile...I put up the "making of" vid on my YouTube Media Blog too. Anyway, I never expect a film or TV adaptation to ever be as complex or enriching as a best-selling book series. That being said, I think they did a good job of capturing the feeling of the novels. IF you just try to put the book plots out of your head and enjoy it for what it is, I think most people will like it and look forward to the rest of the season.

While I disagree with you on the prologue, there are a few things that I wish they would have kept in. I will admit, I enjoyed the first episode, but having read the series four times, it is hard for me to not nitpick. Now the thing is for me, is that the changes for the TV series were neccessary to some degree because of the POV style the books have, the new scenes and the changing of some scenes were odd, but essentially the same things happened...just a bit differently,
the Feast scene from GoT, in the book you may remember that Jon Snow sits in the back of the feast, gets drunk, has the confrontation with Benjen and goes out side and encounters Tyrion. In the series, Jon does not go to the feast, instead he is outside hitting a practice dummy, stating that Catelyn did not want him at the feast at all and than Benjen comes to him and they have their talk. Than afterwards Tyrion talks to him out side.
it is a little different but still gets the point of that scene across. I think some of the changes were neccessary due to the PoV nature of the show. I will tell you though that the episode was paced brilliantly none the less...

Not a problem, and thanks man. Actually go to my channel I actually posted my first vid in seven months. Anyhow, as far as tips go, be honest with how you feel even if your opinion is not popular. Go against the grain even if others go against you, it is the way to go I see it. Never be afraid to post your thoughts, and ignnore the trolls, never respond to them in any way. Just block and move on. I hope that somewhat helps my man!

yeah, the dozens of POV changes in the books would never have worked in a tv format. the biggest way this manifests itself is the editing. i liked in the preview how they put together the boys' training and arya's needlework in the reworked scene. still, i suspect the prologue was more a result of saving money. giant cities and towering walls are easier to make than a believable humanoid up close.

For someone who hasn't read the book, would you suggest reading it first, or waiting until after the first season? I haven't watched the first episode yet.

Well I have read the books four times, and I have to say while the core story is the same, there is enough difference to read the books and watch the series. There are scenes that are either in the books only, or in the series only, or done differently, so yes it is interesting to see these scenes. I would say read the books as you watch the series....

Whatever it is, you can't deny that the GoT opening was all kinds of awesome. It really reminded me of the GoT boardgame. As for the 1st episode itself, it didn't really blow me away but at least it was pretty solid. I'm expecting great things from the TV show.
