Wut?...

I had no idea you could only use select names in certain countries... That's just downright silly (yes, I think she should be able to, as I can't quite comprehend this new concept which I've just discovered...).

An official roster of names sounds like a fine idea to me - Iceland will be completely immune to the terrible influx of Renesmees and Katnisses over the coming decade.

Having a name that's not normal sucks; however, I'm not a supporter of these types of laws. Also don't names change and develop overtime? I mean, I bet "John" would have been a weird name way back then.

I do think people should be able to name their kids whatever they want within reason, but the idea of a certain amount of "legal" names isn't a new concept. I think Japan has something similar, but I might be misinformed on that one.

There are countries where people give kids really awful names... And I mean awful, awful games, like International Conflict, Semen of the Gods, Eveready Battery, US Navy, HTTP and stuff like that. When things get out of control, authorities destroy teh libertarian dream and save those poor kids from a very, very difficult childhood.

Futhermore she's old enough to be able to choose to use her birth name if she wants to.

Names develop and change overtime. What was normal today wasn't normal back then, and what isn't normal could be normal in the future. What is normal in one country may not be normal in another country. However, those names are batsh*t dumb but why infringe on others who want to name their children? Where are the limitations, and how should we even enforce these types of laws? :? Arrest the poor suckers for child abuse for a friggen name?

Also, kids get bullied, regardless of their names and just because you have a weird names doesn't mean your life is condemned.

Also, names like "Wendy" and "Amanda" were weird names during their times until they became popular. Also "Abraham" and "Barack" were also weird and although they're still not popular, people like Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln have been successful.

I get wha tyou mean, and I agree that there shouldn't be a register of "acceptable" names, but I think the government should have the authority to step in if you really go off the deep end when naming your kids.

I wouldn't oppose it it the government prevented parents from naming their child Adolf Hitler or something like that. They have to grow up with the name, and ultimately, it can make employment difficultfor them.

If an 18 year old want to go through the process of legally changing his name, then I see no reason for the government to say anything. That person can live with the conequences, if they chose to change it. ]

A registry of names is a culturally unacceptable law. What about immigrants? how are they to express their culture if they are forced to name their children using a predetermined list. People should be able to name their kids anything they want. The state should only be able to veto a name in extreme situations like adolf hitler or phrases, or some inappropriate word. I would personally like to name my daughter "Purity" when I have her. I've been dead set on that name for the past 8 years. I personally do not like common names like john, mike, angela, ashley, etc.

She should just pick a name off the list and stick with it. There's gotta be something on there she likes.

Friends can still use her old name, but for official purposes, she can have take official name. But no. She has to be a unique snowflake about it it all.

When I first heard this story, it sounded like an arbitrary and unneccesary rule. Surely the last thing we need is more rules, especially for trivial matters. On reflection, I have no real problem with it.

That's very idealistic but not feasible. Again, what can the government do to the parents? Fine them? Arrest and charge them? Although an odd name could have an affect on children, nothing's worse than having your parents suddenly become criminals for a non-violent act. Such a label can have an affect on their careers and livelihood.

There's no doubt there are parents who name their children incredibly odd names such as "Trig" or even offensive names such as Hitler but these parents are a very small minority.

These types of laws are impractical and not even necessary.
