Disney has ****ing done it again. This movie encompasses such a wide audience, but not in the way the wii does; it effectively pleases everyone it's aimed at.
I watched "UP" in 3D, and it's breath taking. The layers of physical depth coupled with vibrant colour designs transcend charm and cuteness and takes on an art form. I have a feeling people will rag on this movie because it's animated, it's Disney Pixar, and some will discredit it immediately. Big mistake; sitting and watching sky scenery and valley scenery with 3D effects and such a clean/crisp animated design, you just have to stop and appreciate it, whether you're 8 or 78 years old.
The story is surprisingly layered. You can take it as a whacky adventure of flying houses and cute chubby little kids, but there are ideas caked underneath the charm that surface in the more serious parts of the film. Ideas like obsessively clinging to the past to the point it blinds you from making the right decisions, ideas like what the spirit of adventure is supposed to be about. There are many scenes that poke at your emotions with themes of loyalty, courage, love, and even some more serious scenes with depictions of steelcold suits crushing the last remnants of a little boy's roots and imagination, all executed with symbols that don't register right away, but you can pick out if you have a critical eye with which you can appreciate that sort of thing. The point is that it's there, perhaps outside the vision of a little kid, but there to be appreciated by older viewers.
"UP" is just teeming with charm, layered with meaning, and executed brilliantly. I hate that people will peg this as a movie that's only good for a few hours with the kids. It's a good movie to see with your friends if you want to see a movie that will make you laugh, tear up, and even think about some abstract ideas that don't come up in our lives, but that exist in many others'.
Whether you watch it or not, you should understand that this is a very good film, worthy of a lot of praise, but constricted because of it's image.
