This is something I actually heard said today. A grown-ass man was in the news for tax evasion or some such, and he was part of this hyperconservative extremist group that hates the government to a Xenophanic conclusion. This man--who, I repeat, was like three times my age and incidentally had just the kind of mustache you'd expect on such a character--stated, in court, on the bench, that you can either be an American or a U.S. citizen, but it is impossible to be both.

And that got me wondering.

So, are you an American, or a U.S. citizen? The wrong answer will be reported to the CIA.

I love how when you're in America people will call themselves sub-category Americans(African American, Latin American, etc.), but if they ever get in trouble over seas they're like "Oh please help me American embassy! I'm America".

why do you mention his age so much?

I'm not really sure what he means by you can be an American or a U.S. citizen, by not both. Maybe he thinks "U.S. citizens" are subservient to the government but Americans are independent or "free"?

And yet anyone born in America is a U.S. citizen at birth, so clearly it's possible to be both a U.S. citizen and an American.

The soveriegn citizen idea is really at the far end of the whackjob scale, especially when it's adherents are talking about kidnapping and torturing people for no reason.

I think I know what the guy is trying to say. On one hand, an "American" is would be considered a real patriot who cares about the underlying values that the country was founded on. A "U.S citizen" sort of sounds like you are submiting yourself to the state authority, even if that authority breaks the values that the country was founded on.

1.) Being born in America doesn't make you a US citizen. I was born in America, and I'm Canadian. I know a few Mexicans who're born in America, and many other Canadians who're born in America. 2.) While being born and raised in the USA does make one a US citizen, Being a U.S. Citizen does not mean you were born and raised in the USA. Americans = People born and raised in the U.S.A, who know the culture (regardless of how stupid), and have experienced it from birth. U.S. Citizen = The thing they call you when your papers get approved.

The queen doesn't really get a say. However she appoints a governor general to sign things off in her name. So i suppose, if she wanted to, she could shut everything down by telling the governor general to simply stop signing off on things. However currently, things get voted for in parliament, and when they pass, the governor general is simply another "required" signature.

Well, not really. Think of it as more of the Congo free state in the late 1800's. It was an independent state but it's King was also the King of Belgium. It's Not the best example I admit, but it helps get the point across.

Unlike India which has been granted independence from British rule, I see nothing that shows Canada has been given the same independence. Hence, still under British rule.

Canada is not under British rule. Britain is not even under 'British rule', they are both independent democracies. Even if the Queen were in charge of either, her titles as Queen of Canada and Queen of England are independent of each other. Canada has been an independent nation since 1867.

Even in Britain the Queen has no actual power of any kind and serves only as a figure head representing the state. Her duties are all traditional. For instance, when it's time for a new election the prime minister visits the Queen and asks her permission to dissolve the current parliament and call an election. He does not *actually* need her permission. She does not *really* give her permission. It's just a tradition which is still abided by because you're talking about a country which is thousands of years old with a lot of history.

tl;dr the Queen is not really the Queen of anything.

You could say that. Not that any Canadian really cares.

It could be the reason why those in Quebec keep wanting to secede and become their own county.

The French are really weird, they want independence but absolutely love the money we give them. And they know the US will gobble them up. I remember reading a while ago plans for the US to gobble up Quebec if it went independent back in the 90's. So their independence wouldn't actually happen anyway.
