they have to start somewhere...
but... to generalize a race or whatever saying that they're all the same sterotype is wrong
The older I get the more I'm convinced that yeah they are. This'll probably sound horrible. We all know them... an asian driving 20 mph with their turning signal on for half a mile in a '94 Camry, a Jew doing your taxes, the rapping black gangster etc. etc. Lately though it seems as if people are simply content with fitting into these types.(ppop culture dosn't help) To me it's dissapointing. I'm sure all these people have a lot more depth to them, but wouldn't having people write you off as just another snobby, preppy, white person wearing ripped jeans and flipflops in February bother you? Does anybody here think they fit their respective racial stereotype and think there's nothing wrong with it? Or am I just ranting about nothing important? Hmmm...I'll go with the latter.espoac
And what do you think hispanics should be like?Â
Most people do not think for themselves, whether that may be due to lack of intelligence or other issue. This means that they either adopt beleifs/attitudes/lifestyles that their parents had, or they just let the topographical/social society that they were born into control the person that they are.
Stereotypes are VERY real. They are based on cultural norms. It's sad though, as no one likes to be labelled, as everyone has some kind of quirky uniqueness, but it's true that most people fit into some kind of general descriptive category.
Politically incorrect? Whatever. Deal with it, or deal with yourself (as hard as it may be) and make a difference.

Hmmm. I don't think they should be like anything, hence my point in making this topic. But if you must know, what my idea of the hispanic stereotype is I'd have to say someone who is slow, mows my lawn and vaccums my pool and is very good at jumping fences. But hey, you made me say it. BTW I'm puerto rican, well half at least.[QUOTE="blackslim3000"][QUOTE="espoac"]The older I get the more I'm convinced that yeah they are. This'll probably sound horrible. Although, I have seen people who fit that description.Â

voilà , you're an individual. Congrats. You've never mowed a lawn though? Ever?If someone is a racial stereotype, it's because they choose to be, not because these people have to be.Rhazakna
Thank you! People don't have to act like their, they choose to. I can't believe people are still so ignorant that they believe in stereotypes!

or because they're too stupid to know any different.[QUOTE="espoac"][QUOTE="Rhazakna"]If someone is a racial stereotype, it's because they choose to be, not because these people have to be.Rhazakna
Still a choice.
Ah, true. I geuss ignorance isn't much of an excuse in this case. Still I can't help but feel sorry for them. The problem is racial stereotypes are only true for a very small portion of a race unless it's something obvious like fried chicken (who doesn't like fried chicken?)
Like mexicans outside of home depot - this probably accounts for less than 3% of the mexican population but it's a popular stereotype.
There are a few stereotypes that prevail but none are a surething, and just because it seems fairly common doesn't mean you should assume that it applies in every case.Â

[QUOTE="dremorius20"]They're all true.espoacI know, everytime I see a black person with baggy jeans listening to rap music I just think "do you have any desire to be an individual, at all?". I just cringe. I hate when people are so shallow that they're predictable.
You cringe because someone isn't an individual in your opinion and he fills the stereotype of that particular race? I mean what do expect TC? That say, a black kid would dress in tight jeans, grow a mohawk and tattoo his forearms in colorful evil ways? That wouldn't make him an individual, it would make him and outcast among his race and a scapegoat for the race he's trying to imitate. I say there's nothing wrong with embracing who you are and what is common among your people.
I just think "do you have any desire to be an individual, at all?". How about next time you see a stereotypical person you approach him/her and talk to them like a human being. Instead of hating what you have judged as predictable.
just another snobby, preppy, white person wearing ripped jeans and flipflops in FebruaryespoacI've never heard that stereotype in my life before and I think you just said it so that way your hoping the mod's won't suspend you cause you made fun of white people as well as Asians...although I agree that Asian's can't drive.
