I was on a date with a black girl and we went to the movies and when we sat down the movie theatre still had the lights on because the movie didn't start for another 10 minutes or so, The commercials hadn't even begun yet and I saw an elderly white woman 55-70 years old just STARING at me as if I was committing a crime. I looked into her eyes and she still wouldn't even look away. I'm not even "white" by the standard definition, but I do look "white". I am a very light skin Puerto Rican with green eyes. I feel as if a ghost was staring at me :(.Plus I live in Brooklyn I thought most mature older folks would've been passed this.

Is inter racial that frowned upon? Will racism in your opinion ever end?

She also had a lazy neck. Swiveling all around and stuff. :D Man, I sure am making myself giggle. To be serious though, I wouldn't be so sensitive. Assuming that "oh she hates me because I'm with a black girl shes an old racist white woman" is almost as racist.

Be honest TC, were you committing a crime at the time?

Ah, just noticed you said you look white, so that joke doesn't work. I'd go with the posters who said you may just be paranoid. Even if she was staring, though, that doesn't mean she disapproved, just that she's not very tactful by gawping at things she's not used to seeing.

there is no evidence that she was looking at you because of the race of your gf...

as for your question...no, it won't...

I laugh at that question. I might sound a bit cynical, but racism will never end. Racism is still pretty bad, but it's not as acceptable as it was in the past, at least in the United States. it's just not as overt as it used to be.

I was somewhat in a similar experince and I understand you being upset. I undertand how people can say it's nothing, and it is, but you can't help to feel insulted during a situation like that. It's best to try to forget it.

When people stop putting importance on race. Thinking your race is special/having racial pride doesn't really help it in my opinion.

Though I don't feel racism toward black people is a big issue in the US or really even an issue at all anymore.

YOur post shows that it will never end.

You don't know anything about that woman. She did not say anything to you or make and racist comments. ANd yet because she is white and/or old you somehow know what she ws thinking. (since your puerto rican i guess it would be ok for someone to think you where going to steal thier car is you where staring at it by your "logic". After all we can know what your are thinking by your race and/or age. )

May be you where loud. Maybeyou look like someone she knows. Maybe she has mental and hearing voices. Maybe she did not want to stare at the walls.

"I looked into her eyes and she still wouldn't even look away." What was she, a 55-70 yearold woman, suppose to do, get scared from a stare down, from a man a fraction of her age, like she is in prison? WHat should she hae done if she was not "racist", grovel at your feet? I have a feeling if she turned away you would have used that as "proof" she is racist.

You can't read someone's mind because of their race or age. the fact she could have done that for many different reasons but the first one you jumped on makes me think that maybe your the one with the racial problem and bias.

The question we should be asking is, "Will the misunderstanding of things we're not familiar with ever end?" Racism is the consequence of the things we don't understand.

What I don't get is that countries like the U.S.A and Australia put such a big emphasis on multiculturalism and racial equality, and then the government gives special priviliges to the minority populations. Just saying.

Also, the lady was probably a witch.

here your problem can you prove its not? i doubt that why would an old lady be looking at two couples when there in a movie theather? when the screen is cleary the otherway. second off. Just cause she didn't say anything means nothing. a picture is a "thounds words" ever heard of that saying? how is he basi and racist problems?

is that just what you said jumping the gun? your just as gulity as him now. good job.... many old people don't bother going to movie theathers.

Unfortunately...it probably wasn't him. Coming from experience, if he thinks the woman was upset because of who he was with, he is probably right. I don't know the young man, however, there is more racism out there than people are willing to admit. And the fact is that racism will never die until we talk about it instead of at each other. MLK states that hate cannot be destroyed by hate but by love. It's an old story but very few are willing to have open/truthful relationships that would provide an environment where racial harmony can flourish. The important question is: Who do you want to be like when you pass form this earth? If you can deal with the internal turmoil of being a racist with all the limitations of the relationships you will restrict yourself to....then by all means - live your closeted life. Me? I'll take enjoying every "good/decent" person I find.

YOur post shows that it will never end.

She was old, naturally older people were raised with a different set of norms then there are today and 70 year ago a interracial couple was pretty much unheard of.

Not for a long while, if at all. I personally do hope to see a future though in which racism is completely gone, or at least confined to an extreme minority of the population.

I'm in brooklyn too and black... it's just something you're supposed to just accept that's apart of a multicultural city/town. Not everyone is okay with other cultures or feel uneasy around them. Even though she was staring at you there's no reason for you to think she's racist. If it really bothered you, then ask her or just tell her that the staring was bothering you.

Simple as that, it's how I would've handled the situation. A couple weeks ago in Mill Basin I was in a russian bar with my one of my friends who is haitian/jewish and my other black friend, the bartender was around our age(25) and sexy - which kept me at the bar - the owner kept coming to see if she needed help with anything and stared me down, I just looked back at him and smiled.

I didn't think of it as anything, because that could be his niece/sister/etc and just didn't want random customers hitting on her... I don't let profiling get the best of me or angry, it's just petty city nonsense.

Racsim will end. Genetics says so. Eventually, the human populationwill look very similar. The problem is that after we look alike, humans will find something else to seperate us: economics, religion, sexual preference...something.
