I just want to take a quick minute in dedicating this thread on behalf of how amazing music and art can be, especially in delivering a universal "language" in so many translations and aspects... Anywho

Taking a break from listening to hordes and hordes of rock music, I began researching tons of classic Hip Hop/Rap artists and albums that have gained respect and are viewed as wonderful pieces of work. I found so many amazing songs and albums, I was just blown away. They just had a completely different dynamic as opposed to most genres in rock and were lyrically poetic and aggressive. Anyone have any personal favorites they would like to share.

As for me, I honestly think this powerful women is perhaps one of the greatest artist of this generation and of time. Fantastic song, and the flow of her poetry is beyond amazing.

Great post; and yeah, Lauryn Hill is great. It's too bad so many people here dismiss hip-hop because of all the negative stereotypes that go with it.

Lauryn Hill is good and she has been in the game for awhile and even when she was part of De La Soul she was amazing. Sadly times have changed and it is no longer about their life experiences in poverty or how they express the hardships on of the streets and ghettos to now it is all about the bling, big cars and fast women.

As for me I pretty much just listen to anything from the late 80's and majority of the 90's but there are some guys coming up from the underground especially in the Midwest region (Michigan, Indiana and Illinois) who are trying to take it back to what Hip-Hop used to be.

So true, its a damn shame how some forms of racism and stereotypes still flood our thoughts without us even realizing it. And Lauryn is a fantastic artist, to bad she went a little over the edge. :?

Well to start you off you can check out Big Sean out of Detroit, Michigan and Freddie Gibbs out of Gary, Indiana.

Big Sean can be fast and he can keep the pace up while Freddie Gibbs has a more laid back feel to it like Snoop and Dre did in the 90's.

Two songs with Nujabes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrG0qkJgPZkFeather
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjqTiQhOgU8Lady Brown
And for just CYNE:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDCcssKX2G8Samura's Optics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZROFPUlfqYRunning Water

Some of the best in Hip-Hop right there IMO. Also as mentioned before Blackstar is very good, also check out black thought form the roots.

While I love some rap and hip hop like Saul Williams, Aesop Rock, and Lauryn Hill, I still think that it can't rival rock. I dont like to compare the genres because they are too different, but no hip hop or rap artist has impressed me as much as some of the best rock musicians like Frank Zappa. Don't get me wrong, I love rap and hip hop, but I cant think of any artist from those genres that are as good as Zappa. I appreciate the poetry in rap, but to me Rock stands out more partly because of the instrumentals, and songwriting.

Lauryn Hill was on top of the world when she debuted. I loved her first album, but after that she kind of went of the rails.

When it comes to hip hop this is great lyrically and instrumentally:

I think thats an unfair statement. Though I agree to an extent, rock music has been around for decades and decades before even the 1900's. Hip hop and rap was and still is kinda fairly new, to compare it to the years rock had is just impossible, and I also think that when you look at rap and hip hop, you don't look for the same things that you do for rock... Either way I somewhat agree with what you are saying, I am a rocker myself but it is interesting comparing the two. :P

Second song ive heard from him. He reminds me a lot like Common except a little more dynamic, and less smooth. Either way, that was really awesome, great find

Yeah. I used to be this adamant "can't spell crap without rap" kid but then I thought "why?" and now I really like rap. Wade through the Soulja Bois and you'll find some good artists.

Agreed. The sax solo on Nas's "Life's a **** is extremely emotional and fits with the song's bleak tale.

Just when y'all thought Queenbridge was a wrap
Nas came back Bridgin' the Gap
Joey Crack told the whole map to Lean Back
For a second you woulda thought New York was takin the scene back
Even Ja dropped a mean track - it went "I'm from New York!"
The first city that have heads to fiend for crack
Now all I hear about is who's a Blood, who's a Crip
Religious leaders only teach half of the truth and ****
I'd rather rock a fake gold crucifix
than them platinum white Jesus faces; he rap like he's a racist
Know a philosopher that reads the pages
So that knowledge I try to keep away from me for ages
(Aww man) It's like I'm in a race against time
Couple years ago I couldn't wait to get signed
I thought automatically that my face'll get shine
But bein lyrical was just a waste of slick rhyme
Cause so, still I annihilate though
The sire lace the place with the fireplace flow
The day y'all could **** with me or Joell Ortiz?
That's the day Hell gon' freeze

I respect Joell Ortiz and I currently like this track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QEJqAfAMzU

awesome thread, I hate that thinking that all hip hop is the hoes and the gangs kinda stuff. don't get me wrong, that has it's place too, but there's so much more if people would just look. on that note, check this out, One Life by Last Emperor ft Too Poetic. really moving song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXWkksacWWI Poetic died of cancer just months later, just adds to the power of it. amazing.

Not true at all someone could listen to every signal, people may not like the fact that pretty much none of them sing or play their own instruments.... And yes i am a huge fan of hip hop and know that some do play their own instruments like shad,B.o.B, The Roots etc. And yes i know a good few can sing very well. But the problem is there's only a few out of a an entire genre.

If you want to hear great lyrical skill mixed with what I think is an amazing flow, check out almost any song on Tical 0 by Method Man.

"Y'all tryin' to get me started / Who on the short yellow bus tryin' to get retarded / Kid don't be the artist / Formerly known as artist / Jump off a skyscraper - to prove who hit the hardest" -- The Motto

Man that's some awesome wordplay!

For some popular hip-hop artists, check out Outkast, the Pharcyde,De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest.

For some lesser known artists check out J-Live (he used to be an English teacher so no wonder he's good with words lol), Organized Konfusion, Aceyalone and Binary Star.

Anyone who isn't ignorant should know that there's a lot of amazing hip hop out there. You can't let the crap that's popular right now define a whole genre.

I believe hip hop is the most versatile genre of music there is. I'm glad you're researching it and enjoying it. Check out k-Os. He's a very unique artist.

with rap, I dont really mind the stealing of beats. Its so common place both past and present, and the emphasis should be on the lyrics, rhyming, etc, that the background music really shouldnt matter that much

Well it's originally sampled from the 1983 song Juicy Fruit by Mtume. A lot of hip-hop artists have sampled it before both Andre Nickatina/Dre Dog and Biggie Smalls did. Biggie's "Juicy" is just the most popular.

Wreckx N Effect- Juicy (1989)

Prince Markie Dee (of the Fat Boys)- Call My Name (1992)

Wow, I am blown away by this thread. Not a single rant, and out of place comment, and this is one of the first times the recommendations of artists have all actually been good. The rap/hip hop enthusiasts should come out more often, very knowledgeable indeed.
