Before I start I would like all the ilttle kids that are tempted to flame this with all rap is crap posts to please take their business elsewhere.  This thread is an honest question.

That being said, does anyone here see a difference between rap and hiphop and if so, what.  I personally say yes and I far prefer hip hop for its roots and artistic upbringing.  There is some good rap, but unfortunately it seems that only its worst examples make it to radio.  Hip Hop almost never gets radio play sadly.

Hip-hop is the lifestyle while rap is the genre. But hip-hop is used as the name of the genre now so they're the same thing

I also prefer Hip Hip. Not only do I think the style of the music is better (beats, rhymes, etc.) but I like how the lyrics of Hip Hop are actually meaningful (Shake that laffy taffy FTL).

I think it was KRS-One who said "Rap is what you do.  Hip hop is what you are."   Something like that.  The way I associate rap and hip hop with is how original or meaningful something is.  50 Cent and G-Unit is rap.  Wu-Tang is hip hop.  MIMS is rap.  k-Os is hip hop.  Faboulous is rap.  Nas is hip hop.  See what I'm saying?  Hip hop just seems more aristic as a whole versus rap.  Not much is being said in rap that already been said, mostly just cars, women, money and jewlery, while hip hop contains music and lyrics can truly move the spirit and make you think; a real story-teller's medium.

I like rap/hip hop. I don't really know the difference.

But I can't stand gangsta rap.

QFT.

All that crap you see on mtv like Lil Jon is rap. Hip Hop is the culture and I agree with Nas as it is dying because all these new rappers don't know what a real MC is and don't know what Hip Hop is really about. Instead they changed it to a contest to whoever has the biggest chain or rims.

I think that all urban music is hip-hop. Hip-hop songs incorporate many elements, including beats, singing (usually in hooks) and most importantly rap. I think rap is just a style of performance that is featured predominantly in hiphop. Is a rapping granny rapping? Yes. Is it hiphop? No. That is how I see it anyway.
