I've only heard of a handful of them, but I'm sure they are all good. When it comes to movies, I don't pay attention to the directors, I just watch the movie:)

Where's Park Chan Wook? I know some of those directors I probably won't recognize unless if you name a movie by them.

Spielberg has moments of absolute genius.

But he's made just a few too many disappointments for me. Munich didn't work for me.

Other than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee is just pretty good, in my opinion. Brokeback Mountain was overrated.

Steven Soderbergh is overrated overall.

I haven't seen enough Robert Rodriguez to judge him. I loved his work in Grindhouse though, same with Sin City. Then again, Sin City was generally just an emulation of the comic.

Considering you named all the concurrently good directors that makes that list pretty damn good. I am shocked and disappointed however that Chris Nolan didn't make the list.

I'm surprised Sophia Coppola isn't on there :(

The Virgin Suicides is on my favorite movies ever, I'd put George Lucas on there not for Star Wars (which was good of course) but for American Graffiti. Also I know Tarentino is overrated, but Pulp Fiction and Grindhouse are awesome.  Oh also the Coppola who directed The Godfathers. Wes Craven is a personal favorite too

A good list. the only choice I don't approve of is Paul Anderson (Event Horizon was excellent, resident Evil was OK, and Transformes looks kinda good too, but his other movies were crap IMHO)

I would have put Blake Edwards on the list too

EDIT: forget what I said about Paul Anderson...I just realized you're talking about the one that made Magnolia :-)

He's made a lot of STDVD films, infact that's the only films he does these days.  That's probably why most people haven't heard about him for a while, LOL :D.

Every director has a bad movie or two, inlcuding directors that made your list.  Coppola made Jack, Finch made Panic Room, Gilliam made Brothers Grimm.  When you talk modern movie making Spielberg MUST come up, put him on the list, he's too inluential not to be on there.

Brad Anderson should be on there too.

[QUOTE="gibsongirl"]Ang Lee, S. Soderburgh, Robert Rodriguez?lemonfreshpanda

Other than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee is just pretty good, in my opinion. Brokeback Mountain was overrated.

Sense and Sensibility, Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, the Wedding Banquet... maybe it's because i'm a girl, sister and daughter, but these movies really speak to me.

You have to see more Rodriquez - go back to El Mariachi. it's awesome in  context.

Steven Soderbergh is overrated overall.

I haven't seen enough Robert Rodriguez to judge him. I loved his work in Grindhouse though, same with Sin City. Then again, Sin City was generally just an emulation of the comic.

Richard Linklater
