I love Starship Troopers! 8/10. I'm a big Sci-Fi fan, and having Denise Richards in it was icing on the cake.
Y'know I often wonder....the first movie was a huge success and I believe won awards for its visual effects....how did it get such crappy sequels?
6/10
Nice use of satire, although maybe a bit TOO obvious.
The musical score was ****ing badass. The musical score during the dropship squence was just ****ing awesome.
Also to the movie's credit, the satire was ****ing prophetic. The movie was made not that long ago. In the years afterwards, we've seen an attack by Muslims, a ****ed up war campaign in the middle east, and an escalation to the point of many people practically declaring a "war on Islam". I know that Verhoeven wasn't saying anything about that, because he couldn't possibly have known. But I'll be damned if Verhoeven wasn't right in one aspect: the more that things change, the more they stay EXACTLY the ****ing same.
I want to love the HELL out of that movie. It had great action, great gore, great boobs, and it was smarter than a hell of a lot of people give it credit for. But ultimately, it's just a guilty pleasure, and for only one reason. The character development scenes were HORRIBLE. The high school drama aspect was so ridiculously awful that it tainted the awesomeness of everything good that happened in the movie. That crap was seriously cringe-inducing, and I don't cringe often. And I've seen a lot of movies far worse than this.
I WANT to love Starship Troopers, but I simply CAN'T. It has so much going for it, but the bad parts seriously just ruin the good parts.
