After a recent discussion about American ratings the topic led onto why it was the case that the ESRB rating system and the ratings on movies and other such medium weren't enforcable by law (I'm not sure if this is true). I remember that there was something mentioned about it being against the constitutional rights of Americans but i'm not sure. Can someone please give me some clarrification on this issue? Thanks in advance.

I've never thought of how this relates to game ratings before but...

It's a shady area because freedom of speech is limited to all things that aren't lude or "trash"...but how does one determine what is lude?

For someone to say that a game is lude and prevent the sale of it to minors, they're essentially removing the freedom of speech from the people who made the game.

But yeah...it's not like anyone does anything with the constitution anymore besides wipe their collective ass with it.

Just out of curiosity, why do people believe that it would be a bad idea to make age restrictions legally enforced?

We don't like the idea of government telling us what we can and can't do. Government submits to the people; people don't submit to the government.

ESRB is there for a reason.. In the end when you are under 18 years of age, you can't be tried as a adult (for the most part), you are fully responsible to your parents etc etc.. I see that is your not quite a real american citizen given all the responsibilites and rights of a adult.. And then again we can also go a step further and point out that alochol and tobacco has age restrictions.. Granted its bad for a developing person, the government has no right of doing anything with your body..

IN all honesty I think its fine the way it is.. After all something like video games, if the parent thinks its ok, the child can come iwth their parent to buy the game or movie.
