Well, it's a bit depressing, but you can't deny it was a hugely impactful novel. It's the Bible of Totalitarian, surveillence-based society. Dystopia.

It didn't impact me at all. I hated the idea of everything in that society being lies. 2+2=5? What the heck? EVERYONE knows that 2+2=4! You CANNOT alter that absolute truth! BTW that "society" reminded me moreof a Communist society than anything else.
Totalitarianism (or totalitarian rule) is a political system where the state, usually under the control of a single political person, faction, or class recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible.
Communism is a social structure in which classes are abolished and property is commonly controlled, as well as a political philosophy and social movement that advocates and aims to create such a society.
That book displayed Totalitarianism/Authoritarianism, not Communism. In true Communism, there is no one in control (or rather, EVRYONE is in control).
And the point of 2+2=5 was to convey how the Party used Newspeak and Doublethink to control even peoples thoughts. To cage their minds and wills so as to have complete control over them.
The book was brilliant. I understand if you didn't like it, but it still stands out as a Masterpieces, even today.
On paper Coomunism looks good. In reality it IS a totalitarian system. The pary leaders live in fear ofthe partylinechanging over night and hearing the dreaded knowck of the secret police. Look at North Korea! That is a prime example of 1984. And it is under communist rule. BTW I do know what the differences are between the two systems. The other thing that irks me about that book is all these Ministry. Ministry of Love is the troture and execution chamber. There is no justice. It ought to be Ministry of Hate; not Love. There is no emotion in that accursed world.
