I'm planning on buying some novels soon in choosing which ones I should get. Anything along the lines of a thriller, mystery, adventure or just anything with a good plot and storyline is good for me.

Also, no romance, vampire or werewolf mumbo jumbo.

So what are your suggestions?

Look for an author called Jeffery Deaver, he writes really good crime novels. The movie, Bone Collector was based on his book.

Romance, vampire or werewolf "mumbo jumbo" surely indicates Twilight, and not the countless classic novels based around those subjects, right? Anyways, I'm reading Brave New World by Aldous Huxley right now. Damn good novel.

My personal favorite is Timeline by Michael Crichton. Currently, I'm reading The Andromeda Strain, also by Michael Crichton. Both are really good.

You should read Harry Potter because its a good series if you read it in order. And there is

  1. Murder in the Orient Express - Agatha Christie
  2. Moonstone - Wilkie Collins
  3. To Kill a Mocking Bird - Harper

Lord of the Ringgs (any of the books) and The Hobbit. Also, any of the Sackett books are good by Louis L'Amour. The Jamers Herriott books are excellent as well.

Well, it's a bit depressing, but you can't deny it was a hugely impactful novel. It's the Bible of Totalitarian, surveillence-based society. Dystopia.

I just read Kafka's "The Castle" a second time, coincidentally enough. (Coincidental because of my name). Anything by Kafka is worth reading. I also read the entirety of Arthur C. Clarke's short stories recently, though Rendezvous with Rama is a much better introduction to Clarke, as is the entire Space Odyssey series.

Reading girl with the dragon tattoo at the moment. I love this book, will be reading the others in the series after.

Previously read Metro 2033, an amazing book as well as American Psycho. Will probably read fight club once I've done with the millennium series.

Totalitarianism (or totalitarian rule) is a political system where the state, usually under the control of a single political person, faction, or class recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible.

Communism is a social structure in which classes are abolished and property is commonly controlled, as well as a political philosophy and social movement that advocates and aims to create such a society.

That book displayed Totalitarianism/Authoritarianism, not Communism. In true Communism, there is no one in control (or rather, EVRYONE is in control).

And the point of 2+2=5 was to convey how the Party used Newspeak and Doublethink to control even peoples thoughts. To cage their minds and wills so as to have complete control over them.

The book was brilliant. I understand if you didn't like it, but it still stands out as a Masterpieces, even today.

I quite enjoyed Blindness by Jose Saramago.

I've heard that "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" series is good. Not sure if it'll become another Twilight fad yet though...

That's a great one; I read it earlier this year.

Anyway, I am currently reading The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens (am about four chapters in). Not really sure if it's good yet, but it's of course well written so I might read it a little more.

I finished reading Huckleberry Finn again not long ago, so there's that. That's still really good, in case anyone was wondering. All of what I'm reading now is non-fiction.

Adventure:

  • Just about anything by Clive Cussler is pretty good though my personal favorites are Raise the Titanic, Night Probe, and Treasure.
  • Temple or Ice Station both by Matthew Reilly (fairly mindless action/adventure)

Good Plot:

  • Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett
  • Shogun - James Clavell
  • Lamb - Christopher Moore

These are all generally read for pleasure books as I'm an escapist reader, rather than a philosophical reader.

On paper Coomunism looks good. In reality it IS a totalitarian system. The pary leaders live in fear ofthe partylinechanging over night and hearing the dreaded knowck of the secret police. Look at North Korea! That is a prime example of 1984. And it is under communist rule. BTW I do know what the differences are between the two systems. The other thing that irks me about that book is all these Ministry. Ministry of Love is the troture and execution chamber. There is no justice. It ought to be Ministry of Hate; not Love. There is no emotion in that accursed world.

Last book I read was Animal Farm. Decent novel, but I found the introduction and prefaces by Orwell more interesting than the book itself. I love the last line.

Well, considering that the author Stieg Larsson is dead, I don't expect the series to go beyond the third book.....

All three books are good, though. Give them a read, TC, if you like mystery thrillers with a slow build.

In the past six months, I'd say that Anathem by Neal Stevenson has been my novel. He creates a really interesting world and it has a fairly epic storyline. Its one hell of a book though, so I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for something short.
