Reading Materials

Over winter break, I have been preparing for my next set of courses by visiting websites with video footage and readable materials. Until now, something I have not invested much time into is any ebook format. After doing some research, I found that there are many, many of them available and tens of thousands are legally free. With a kindle or other ebook reading device and a program called calibre, I have been increasing my library. At the rate I am going, ebook files shall be my main type of reading material, soon.

Readers, what is your primary format of book reading material?

The library. I can read a novel in one sitting, why pay for it?

@br0kenrabbit: Libraries are definitely helpful. I have been considering a visit to the Vanderbilt library to see what they have.

Keep in mind if they don't have what you're looking for they can order it for you. I've actually got to stop by the library on Tuesday to see if one I ordered is in: We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Apparently it heavily influenced George Orwell, so hell yeah I'm gonna bite.

Yes, that is a convenient ability of brick and mortar libraries. A kindle is the closest thing I have used to paper text. The contrast and lighting is very realistic and not glaring.

Yep, library fees are very nominal generally. I have a library card and also donated around 100 books (old novels) of my uncle to the library, they don't charge me anymore annually, got lifetime membership for free Heh.

@indzman: My city library gives a free account and access to library content to city residents.

Mines library is local, run by community residents (mostly senior citizens). They charge around 5 dollars ( in rupees conversion if its 65rs = 1 dollar ) annually to maintain membership. I don't mind it as they keep staff, proper book shelves, updating book sections from time to time as it also costs money and give the elders fees to running and maintaining the library as no ones funding the library. Good thing sometimes members donate books to the library :)

I haven't gone to the Library in a long time, busy at work and home but I do go to Boarders to buy books, magazines, and I really like Sy-Fy fiction books. I prefer holding a book, not ebooks or Kindle. I still read Manga from time to times.

For learning material definitely the library. I do pay 50€ a year but they have everything from language books, to handcrafting books, to sheet music, to movies, etc. Sadly they are sorely lacking in fantasy novels which are my primary form of "pleasure reading" so for those I have my e-reader...I still prefer books but I normally take anywhere from an afternoon to 3 or 4 nights of "reading in bed before falling asleep" to finish a book, so I would have definitely run out of space if I had bought all physical copies.

BEST HABIT EVER, reading going into sleep. Helps a lot if one can't sleep :)

@indzman: Unless you're one of those people, like me, who is reading with one eye open and one closed, half asleep and saying "just one more chapter and then I'll stop" and then at the end of the chapter says "ohh, cliffhanger...just one more chapter then"

I haven't been like that since the final Harry Potter book. Which I read in one sitting immediately after coming home from the midnight release.

@Storm_Marine: It's not even necessarily because it's a really interesting book, I just really enjoy reading and don't really like sleeping, so I make excuses =P

I don't own any tablets, never owned any tablets or any fancy mobiles also :(

@indzman: Mine isn't a tablet, it's an e-reader only. You read books and you play sudoku if you want to; that's it XD No browser or anything.

@thegerg: I read about 4 to 6 hours a day (or should I say night) and I charge it maybe once a month and a half....it's crazy (I do keep wi-fi disabled and only turn it on to update and download books)

EDIT: Also, mine is black & white display only =)

There was a local Borders in my town, but it has been replaced by a shoe store. Barnes & Noble is still here.

What science fiction and manga do you read?

I make an small order on Amazon a couple times a year. There's really not a whole lot of books out there that I'm interested in and want to read.

By the looks of it, he never wrote any books (or did he?) However either way, you seem to have a strong interest/liking towards Rene Descartes. :P

I think he wrote a philosophy book but I chose the avatar because of the meme involving Rene's face. ._.

Ah, did not realize there was a Meme of him out now. There's a lot of memes out there in the internet world these days, and it only keeps increasing. :P

Paperback for novels. I really dislike e-readers.

For comics/manga, tpbs when I can, individual issues when the tpbs aren't out yet/are too expensive.

I'm reading Naruto: Shippuden, but I'm way behind the series as it is and as well as the Anime. Going to work pretty much killed it for me to read any Manga's. Going to Barnes & Nobles is a long ride and probably about an one hour and a half.

Paper book.

Amazon might be a decent alternative. They charge less than B&N for the same products.

I still prefer real books =P
